The Three Football Turf Sizes in India
Football turf in India is built to three fixed formats: 5-a-side (45m × 25m footprint), 7-a-side (75m × 50m footprint), and full 11-a-side FIFA (110m × 75m footprint). The playing area inside each is set by FIFA — only the buffer and support land around it is negotiable.
These aren't marketing sizes — they're what the game itself requires. FIFA fixes the 5-a-side (futsal-style) playing area at 40m × 20m, the informal 7-a-side pitch at roughly 65m × 40m, and the full 11-a-side pitch at 100m × 64m, with a permitted range of 90m×45m at the minimum to 120m×90m at the maximum. Builders add run-off space around each to get the buildable footprint.

Run-Off Buffers: Why You Can't Build Wall-to-Wall
The playing area numbers above are non-negotiable, but the 2–3m buffer around them is what actually gets cut when land is tight — and it's the buffer that keeps the ball, the players, and anyone standing nearby safe.
A striker chasing a wide ball at full speed doesn't stop at the touchline. Without at least 2–3m of run-off before the fence, players slide into chain-link at pace, and the fence itself takes hits it wasn't built to absorb every session. That buffer is also where floodlight poles, gate access, and drainage channels usually sit — remove it and you have nowhere to put them either.
This is why the footprints in the table above are always bigger than the bare playing area: 45m × 25m instead of 40m × 20m, 75m × 50m instead of 65m × 40m, 110m × 75m instead of 100m × 64m. Treat the buffer as part of the pitch, not spare land you can shave off to fit a smaller plot.
Goals, Fencing & Floodlight Geometry
Goal posts are 2.44m high × 7.32m wide at every tier — 5-a-side, 7-a-side, and full 11-a-side all use the same FIFA goal, because the goal is the one dimension that never scales down with the pitch. Fencing and lighting, by contrast, do scale with format.
Fencing needs a minimum of 3m for a 5-a-side arena and 3.5–5m for 7-a-side and full-size pitches — high enough to stop clearances leaving the ground on a busy Sunday evening. Floodlight poles sit just outside the buffer zone, angled inward: 4–6 poles for a 5-a-side box, 8–10 for 7-a-side, 12–16 for a full FIFA ground. Orientation: North-South Beats East-West
Lay the pitch's long axis roughly north–south, not east–west. An east–west pitch puts one team facing directly into a low morning or evening sun for a full half — a real problem for evening 5-a-side leagues under floodlights, where the setting sun and the lights compete for a few painful minutes each match.
This matters most for commercial arenas running back-to-back evening slots, where every match starts at a fixed time regardless of where the sun is. A north–south layout keeps the sun to the sides for most of the day, so no one is staring into it during a decisive minute. It costs nothing extra to orient correctly at the design stage — get it wrong, and there's no cheap fix afterward.
Land Beyond the Pitch
The footprint numbers above are the pitch alone — a working facility needs more. Budget an extra 30–50% of land for parking, a walkway around the fence, and, for any commercial or school build, changing rooms and toilets.
A pay-and-play 5-a-side arena in Gurgaon or Noida typically sits on a 2,000–2,500 sqm plot for exactly this reason — the 1,125 sqm pitch, plus parking for players arriving by car or bike, a walkway for the next group waiting their turn, and space for a small office or seating. Mini-story — Noida, 2025. Facility owner Manish Sethi bought a 3,200 sqm plot advertised as "enough for a 7-a-side turf" without checking it against the actual 3,750 sqm footprint a 7-a-side pitch needs once buffer, fencing, and an access road are subtracted. His structural drawings were redone mid-approval to fit a 5-a-side 45m × 25m box instead — a shrink he discovered only eight weeks before his planned opening. Mini-story — Faridabad, 2024. At a 5-a-side arena near the Delhi-Faridabad border, owner Sanjay Bhatia shaved the run-off buffer to under a metre on one side to fit a snack counter next to the fence. Within two months, a cleared ball struck a customer standing at the counter. The arena removed the counter, rebuilt that stretch of fencing 2m further back, and repainted the boundary — a rework that cost ₹1.1 lakh and shut the arena for a week.

Evening leagues starting at 6:30 PM — the arena's most profitable slot — drew constant complaints about players on one end squinting into the setting sun even with the floodlights on. The owner installed a ₹95,000 shade screen on the western fence and discounted that end's kick-off times by ₹200/hour to keep the slot booked.
What Goes Wrong When Layout Is an Afterthought
Beyond buffer and orientation, the layout mistake that costs the most after handover is placing floodlight poles or gate access inside the run-off zone instead of outside it — because moving a pole means re-digging a foundation and rerouting wiring, not just repainting a line.
A pole planted 1.5m off the touchline looks fine on a drawing, but once players are diving for wide balls at match pace, it becomes a real collision hazard — and a liability problem for a commercial or school operator. Relocating a single pole after the base has cured typically costs ₹40,000–₹80,000, once you account for breaking out the old foundation, re-trenching for wiring, and re-curing the new base.
