None of these seven mistakes are visible on handover day. A rippled base, a weak seam, or a drain sized for the wrong rainfall all look identical to good work when the turf is fresh. They show up six months to two years later, usually right after the first serious monsoon or the first full season of hard use.

Mistake 1: Cutting Corners on the Base
Skip the compacted sub-base and binder layer to save money upfront, and the turf above it settles unevenly within a year or two, with a fix that costs two to three times what the shortcut saved.
In plain terms, the base is everything under the turf: compacted stone and gravel, sometimes topped with a bituminous binder course, that carries player weight and lets water pass through evenly. It works like a foundation — invisible once the turf is down, but it decides whether the surface stays flat for ten years or ripples in two.
Mini-story: Gurgaon, 2025. Rajeev built a 5-a-side arena on a ₹28 lakh all-in budget. To save roughly ₹1.2 lakh, the contractor skipped the bituminous binder course and laid turf straight over compacted gravel. By the following monsoon, one flank had rippled visibly and the ball skidded unevenly off it. Fixing it meant excavating a 2,000 sqft strip, laying the binder properly, and relaying turf: ₹3.8 lakh, more than three times what the shortcut had saved.
A correctly speced sub-base for a small arena costs roughly ₹1.2–1.8 lakh at build time. Ask any contractor to show the compaction test result and the binder-course drawing before turf goes down, not after.
Mistake 2: Skipping Drainage Design
A football turf without a properly engineered drainage system does not just get wet in the monsoon — it floods and stays flooded, closing the arena for three to five days at a time.
Turf is permeable, so water is meant to pass through it into a subsurface drain and out to a perimeter outlet, on at least a 1% slope. A surface swale alone (a shallow ditch catching only top runoff) is not the same thing and fails the first real North India downpour.
Mini-story: Noida, Sector 63, 2025. Priya's arena BOQ dropped the subsurface French drain to save ₹45,000, keeping only a surface swale. The first heavy July downpour left the pitch waterlogged for four days straight. Between ₹65,000 spent retrofitting a proper perimeter drain and roughly ₹1.6 lakh in cancelled bookings that month, the saved ₹45,000 turned into a ₹2.25 lakh loss.
Drainage design has to happen before the turf is ordered. It cannot be retrofitted cheaply once the surface is down. Budget ₹36–60k for drainage on a 5-a-side footprint at build stage, and treat it as non-negotiable in a monsoon zone.
Mistake 3: Cheap Infill Instead of the Right Spec
Infill is the sand-and-rubber granules packed between the turf blades — get the mix or depth wrong and the surface drains poorly, plays inconsistently, and needs an early, expensive redo instead of a scheduled top-up.
Correct infill for most Indian arenas is silica sand combined with SBR rubber (or a premium TPE blend for higher grades), at a total depth of 12–20mm. Plain sand-only infill is cheaper on the invoice, but it compacts, drains badly, and makes the ball bounce unpredictably within a season or two.
Swapping out the wrong infill for the right spec across a small arena costs roughly ₹2.5–5 lakh, on top of whatever was already spent on the sand-only version. Specifying it correctly the first time costs a fraction of that, built into the original turf price.
