Walk into a badminton hall with a low tin roof and you can tell in the first five minutes. Every high clear clips a purlin, and the coach is shouting "lower it" instead of teaching technique. That is what happens when the shed goes up before anyone checks the one number that actually matters.
The shed or roof structure is the part of a badminton court build that decides whether the game above the net actually works, and it is the piece most quotes gloss over. Flooring gets all the attention in cost conversations. The building around it decides whether the court is even playable.

Minimum Ceiling Height for a Badminton Shed
A badminton court needs a minimum of 9 metres of clear ceiling height, measured from the floor to the lowest point of the roof structure, not the eaves. That clearance exists so a full-power smash or a high defensive clear has room to travel without clipping a truss, purlin, or light fixture.
9m is not a suggestion you can trim to save on steel. Below it, players end up adjusting their shots to avoid the roof, which means the court can host casual rallies but never real competitive play. It is the single number every shed or PEB design has to start from.
Ask your contractor for clear height specifically, in writing. Some quotes state the height to the eaves or the ridge, which is higher than the usable space under the lowest cross-member — a gap that only shows up once the roof is already built.
Truss Shed vs PEB: What's the Difference
A truss shed is a basic bolted steel frame with corrugated or AC-sheet roofing, built with no architectural finish beyond keeping rain and sun out. A PEB, short for pre-engineered building, is a steel structure designed and largely fabricated in a factory, then bolted together on site, with tighter tolerances and the option of insulated roofing.
Both structures can clear the 9m minimum. The difference is scale and finish, not the sport's basic requirement. A truss shed suits one or two courts, where the goal is a functional, weather-tight enclosure at the lowest reasonable cost.
A PEB suits a bigger academy hall, where the owner wants a taller ceiling with room to spare, a cleaner finish, and better thermal performance across a large roof span. It costs more, and it is built for a different scale of project.
What a Basic Truss Shed Costs
A basic truss shed for a single court does not carry its own separate line item — it is already built into the ₹5–20 lakh single-court figure from our badminton court construction cost guide: ₹5–8 lakh for budget vinyl flooring, ₹9–14 lakh for mid-tier PU or acrylic, and ₹16–20 lakh for premium wooden sprung floors.
What that figure buys on the structure side is a bolted steel-truss frame, corrugated or AC-sheet roofing, and the 9m clearance the sport needs. No insulation, no architectural finish, just a weather-tight shed over the court. PEB Structure Cost for Multi-Court Academies
PEB shells for larger academy halls run roughly ₹1,200–2,000 per sq ft in 2026, depending on ceiling height and design complexity — a market and vendor figure, not an official spec. A 5,000 sq ft, 3-court facility can see structure cost alone land anywhere from roughly ₹60 lakh to ₹1 crore at that band.
Ceiling height drives most of that range. Pushing the clear height from a bare-minimum 9m up to 30–40 feet, roughly 9–12m, which many multi-court academies want for extra headroom and better air circulation, adds real steel tonnage and pushes cost toward the top of the band.

The gap in cost basis is the whole point. A truss shed's price rides inside your flooring budget, while a PEB is priced by the square foot on its own, separately from everything that goes inside it.
North India Heat and Roof Insulation
North India summers hit 42–48°C, and an uninsulated tin or AC-sheet roof turns that heat straight into the hall by early afternoon, making a basic shed genuinely uncomfortable to play in during peak summer hours. A PEB can add PUF or rockwool insulation under the roof sheet as an upgrade, cutting down the radiant heat coming through.
Insulation is not a standard inclusion on either structure type. It is worth pricing separately when you get a PEB quote, and worth asking about even on a basic shed if your court runs afternoon sessions through May and June.
Failure Modes That Cost Lakhs to Fix

Mini-story — Ghaziabad, 2025. A residential sports club building its first indoor court chose the cheapest truss-shed fabricator, who quietly built to a ridge height of about 7.5m instead of the specified 9m clear. Within the first month of coaching sessions, players' high clears and smashes were clipping the purlins on nearly every rally. Fixing it meant jacking up the trusses and adding a raised ridge section over the existing frame — a structural redo that pushed the club's total spend past ₹20 lakh, the top of even the premium single-court band, before the court was usable for real play.
Mini-story — Indore, 2024. A coach who had built one court under a basic ₹9 lakh truss shed decided to scale up to a 4-court academy hall, and assumed the shed budget would simply multiply by four. Retrofitting an insulated liner under the existing roof afterward meant working above a live court and rescheduling every booking around it.

Questions to Ask Your Contractor
- Is the quoted ceiling height the clear height to the lowest truss or purlin, or the height to the eaves?
- Is this a basic truss shed or a genuine PEB, and is that reflected in the price basis — per-court, or per square foot?
- Is roof insulation (PUF or rockwool) included, or is it a separate line item on the quote?
- For a multi-court hall, is the structure priced per square foot separately from flooring, marking and net posts?
- Is the steel powder-coated, and is that sufficient for our site, or does the location call for anything more?
