Mistake 1: Roof Built Below 9m Clear Height
Build the shed roof to save on steel and every hard smash or high defensive clear starts clipping trusses mid-flight — a court that looks finished but can never host real competitive play. BWF requires 9 metres of clear height from the floor to the lowest point of the roof structure, not the eaves, and that number is not negotiable.
In plain terms: "clear height" means the actual open space a shuttle has to travel through, measured to the lowest truss, purlin or light fixture — not the taller number a contractor might quote to the ridge or the eaves. A shed can look 9m tall on paper and still leave players only 7.3m of usable air above the court.
Mini-story — Noida, 2025. A housing society building its first indoor court let the fabricator frame the shed to "25 feet" to save on column and truss steel. Once the lighting crew came to hang fixtures, the actual clear height under the truss's bottom chord measured 7.5m, nearly 1.5m short of the 9m minimum. Players complained that every full smash was clipping the roof within the first week of play. Mistake 2: Flooring Chosen for Price, Not Use
Pick the cheapest flooring for a court that will see daily academy traffic, and players start reporting shin pain or ankle strain within months — a floor that looked identical to the correct spec on handover day. Bare acrylic on concrete is the cheapest way to tick the "badminton court" box and the hardest on joints over sustained use.
India's four common badminton flooring types are PU (polyurethane), acrylic, vinyl/PVC synthetic mat, and wooden sprung floor — each trades cost against grip and shock absorption differently. A recreational court used a few times a week can tolerate a harder surface; a court booked for daily coaching cannot, because repeated hard landings on an unforgiving floor add up to real injury risk.

Mistake 3: Lighting Quoted by Fixture Count, Not Lux
A contractor who quotes "12 LED lights" for your hall is guessing, not designing — and the mistake only shows up once real matches start, as shadowed corners and glare on smashes that make the shuttle hard to track. Mistake 4: No AC Plan for North India Summer
Skip air conditioning to save on the build and a sealed indoor hall turns into a greenhouse by early afternoon through North India's 42–48°C summers — bookings quietly disappear for the hottest four hours of the day, every day, for months. A shuttlecock also weighs only about 5 grams, so open fans and cross-drafts from badly placed split units drift its flight, which is the real reason halls are sealed and cooled rather than naturally ventilated.
Mini-story — Gurgaon, 2025. A new three-court hall opened with exhaust fans and a swamp cooler instead of full AC, saving roughly ₹9 lakh against the HVAC quote on the table. By the second week of May, midday indoor temperature was crossing 38°C, and the 12pm–4pm coaching slots went almost entirely unbooked. The owner retrofitted split ACs and a dehumidifier mid-season for ₹11.5 lakh, more than the original saving, after an estimated ₹2.8 lakh in lost bookings that summer alone.

Mistake 5: Tight Side and Back Clearance
Pour the 13.4m × 6.1m court correctly but skimp on the buffer space around it, and players chasing wide shots or deep clears slam straight into a wall or fence mid-rally. A badminton court needs real run-off beyond the lines — not just the marked playing area — for the game to actually be safe and playable.
This is the buffer contractors trim first, because it looks like "wasted" floor space on a drawing. In practice, it's the difference between a court where players can move freely and one where every wide shot carries a collision risk.
Extending a slab or fence line after the court is built means breaking out and re-pouring at the edges — a job that costs several times what the extra buffer would have added to the original slab. Ask for the full run-off dimensions in writing before the slab is poured, not after.
Mistake 6: Skipping a Proper Shock-Absorbing Base
Lay a hard flooring system straight onto bare concrete with no cushioned underlay, and repeated jumping and lateral cutting on badminton's stop-start footwork starts causing joint pain within months — sometimes a diagnosed stress fracture, not just soreness. A proper base absorbs impact before it reaches a player's knees and ankles.
Mini-story — Faridabad, 2024. A coaching academy laid a ₹1.8 lakh PVC roll mat straight onto trowelled concrete to save the ₹90,000 foam-backed underlay. Mistake 7: Cheap Net Posts and Net
Budget net posts flex or bend under correct string tension, letting the net height sag below the 1.55m post / 1.524m centre spec within weeks of regular use — a small line item that quietly changes how the game plays. Graded, properly rated posts hold tension and height for years; unrated ones don't.
This is the cheapest mistake on this list to fix, but it's also the one buyers most often skip checking. A sagging net changes shot dynamics and frustrates any serious player within the first few sessions, even though the fix — replacing posts and net with correctly rated equipment — runs only ₹8,000–25,000.
Ask your contractor to show the tension rating on the posts, not just confirm "yes, we include a net." It takes two minutes and prevents a needless second purchase.

- What are the side and back run-off dimensions beyond the marked court lines?
- Are the net posts graded for correct string tension, with height that holds under use?
