Every quote you get before a soil test is a placeholder. A contractor pricing your sub-base without knowing your soil type is either padding the number to cover risk, or hoping the risk never shows up.
In North India, most sites sit on alluvial soil that just needs compaction and a CBR check. But black cotton soil — common in Madhya Pradesh and pockets of UP and Rajasthan — behaves completely differently under a turf, and that difference is expensive to discover after installation.
What a Proper Soil Test Actually Checks
A proper football turf soil test measures three things: bearing capacity (CBR), how much the soil swells or shrinks with moisture, and where the water table sits. The base under a turf is built from compacted fill or PCC (porous concrete course — a partial-strength concrete that lets water pass through), then on premium builds a 10–15mm rubber shock pad, then the turf itself.
None of those layers has the mass or rigidity to resist a soil that is actively swelling and shrinking underneath it. When black cotton soil moves, the drainage membrane distorts first — exactly the layer monsoon water depends on.
The result shows up as a visible ripple under the turf, misaligned drainage holes, and standing water in the one spot that used to drain fine. The depth depends on how far the problem soil runs. A shallow pocket near one corner might need only 0.6m of excavation. A site sitting entirely on black cotton soil can need the full 1.2m, plus the RCC (reinforced cement concrete) rim around the perimeter that stops water re-entering the replaced fill from the sides.
