    Skip a proper drainage slope and subsurface pipe, and a cricket ground doesn't just get wet in the monsoon — it stays waterlogged for three to five days at a time, closing the ground and cancelling booked matches. A flat pitch or outfield is the single most common drainage mistake in North India.

    In plain terms, water needs somewhere to go — a 1–1.5% fall on the pitch, plus a perforated pipe underneath, or it just sits there until it evaporates on its own.

    Mini-story — Noida, 2025. Academy owner Rohan Verma hired the cheapest bidder for a new practice pitch, and the contractor skipped the sub-base drainage pipe to save roughly ₹1.5 lakh. The first heavy July downpour left standing water trapped under the surface for four days, cancelling two weeks of evening bookings. Ripping up the turf, installing proper drainage, and relaying it cost Rohan ₹4 lakh — nearly a third of the pitch's original ₹13 lakh build.

    Mistake 3: Wrong Turf or Matting Spec for the Budget

    Choosing matting-over-concrete for a ground that will host real matches, or artificial turf without UV stabilisation, both save money upfront and cost more within two to three years. Non-UV turf fades and cracks under North India's 300-plus sunny days; matting was never designed for match-quality bounce.

    In plain terms, matting-over-concrete (rubberised matting on a concrete slab) is the fastest, cheapest practice surface — fine for academy drills, not accepted for match cricket. UV-stabilised simply means the fibres are treated to resist sun damage; without it, heat and UV cut the surface's life to a third of normal.

    A school in Lucknow chose a budget turf without confirming UV stabilisation, saving about ₹40,000. Within two summers the turf had faded and gone brittle, ball bounce turned unreliable, and coaches stopped using it for match practice — resurfacing cost ₹2.6 lakh, more than six times the original saving.

    Mistake 4: Rushing the Concrete Cure and Ignoring Flatness

    Coat or turf the RCC (reinforced cement concrete) base before its full 28-day cure, and moisture trapped underneath blisters the surface within months. Skip checking flatness during the pour — the standard is no more than 1/8 inch of deviation over 10 feet — and the pitch plays with an inconsistent bounce for its entire life.

    Concrete keeps gaining strength for 28 days. Coating or turfing it early traps moisture with nowhere to go, and flatness — checked with a straightedge during the pour — cannot be fixed cheaply once the concrete has set.

    Mistake 6: Undersized Floodlighting for Evening Play

    Basic yard lights instead of a proper photometric plan look identical to the correct spec in daylight — the mistake only shows up after 7pm, when a practice net or ground goes dark exactly when working parents and office cricketers want to play.

    Lighting is measured in lux, a plain way of describing how bright the surface actually is underfoot. Practice nets need at least 200–300 lux; anything less makes the ball genuinely hard to pick up, especially near the edges of a net or boundary.

    Retrofitting a proper pole layout and photometric-planned fixtures after the fact costs ₹1–2 lakh, more than it would have cost to spec correctly inside the original lighting budget — and every dark evening in between is lost booking revenue.

    Mistake 7: Skipping AMC and Maintenance Planning

    Treat a cricket surface as a one-time build with no maintenance budget, and it degrades far faster than its rated lifespan.
