A club in Faridabad once asked us for "the good pitch" without saying what that meant. They ended up with natural turf, a groundskeeper they hadn't budgeted for, and a pitch that sat unplayable for a week every monsoon. The surface wasn't wrong, the decision behind it was made without knowing the trade-offs.
Four surfaces get used for cricket pitches in India: natural turf, artificial turf, matting-over-concrete, and plain concrete. A pitch-only build runs ₹3–15 lakh depending on which one you pick, and the gap between the cheapest and the most demanding option is not just upfront cost. It is who has to show up every week to keep it playable.
You do not need to be a groundsman to get this right. You need to know what each surface actually costs to build, prepare before a match, and maintain year-round. That is what this guide covers.
Four Surface Options, Compared
Natural grass is the only surface accepted for serious match cricket, and artificial turf gives realistic bounce with far less upkeep. Matting-over-concrete is the cheapest, fastest practice option, while plain concrete alone is the bare minimum: usable but unforgiving. Here is how they stack up.

Natural grass is what BCCI-standard matches are played on, and nothing else is a substitute if that is your ambition. Everything else on this list is a practice or budget surface: good, but not a replacement for turf when the format demands it.
Cost by Pitch Type
A pitch-only build in India costs ₹3–15 lakh, and where you land in that range depends entirely on the surface. This is the cost of the pitch alone — not the mown outfield or boundary that a full ground needs.
- Matting-over-concrete: ₹3–6 lakh. RCC (reinforced cement concrete) base at ₹30–60/sq ft plus rubberised matting at ₹40–80/sq ft. Fastest to build, since no 28-day concrete cure is needed for playability once the mat is down.
- Plain concrete: ₹3–5 lakh. Just the RCC slab, no surface treatment. Cheapest, but bounce is hard and unforgiving, so it is mostly used for informal or box-cricket-style setups, not serious practice.
- Artificial turf: ₹8–15 lakh. RCC base, sand cushion layer, and UV-stabilised synthetic turf (₹90–120/sq ft for Tier 1 brands). More realistic bounce than matting, far less upkeep than grass.
- Natural turf: ₹10–15 lakh and up. Soil testing, RCC sub-base, Bermuda grass laying, and a basic curation setup (roller, mower). This is the pitch alone. A mown infield and outfield to make it a full ground adds significantly more; see our full cricket ground construction cost breakdown.
If a contractor quotes a natural-turf pitch under ₹8 lakh, ask what is missing. Usually it is the soil test, the curation equipment, or both, and you will pay for them later at a worse price.
Pitch Preparation, By Surface
Preparing a natural turf pitch for a match takes days: rolling, mowing, and tapered watering so the surface dries firm by play day. Preparing a matting pitch takes an hour: stretching and re-tensioning the mat over the concrete base. Getting this step wrong is one of the most common reasons a pitch plays badly.
For natural turf, pre-match preparation follows a set rhythm: heavy rolling with a 50–100 tonne roller several days out to compact the surface and firm up the bounce, mowing down to a 10–13mm stack height, and watering that starts generously and tapers off so the pitch is dry and hard on match day, not soft and slow. Get the watering wrong, too much or too late, and the pitch plays slow and low. Too little, and it cracks open under the sun.
For matting, preparation is mechanical rather than horticultural. The mat has to be pulled drum-tight across the base and anchored at both ends, since a loose or wrinkled mat changes the bounce from one end of the pitch to the other, the kind of inconsistency that makes batsmen distrust the surface. Ends are re-checked and re-tensioned before serious sessions, not left set-and-forget.
Artificial turf needs the least day-of preparation. A check that the sand infill is level and no seams have lifted is usually enough, since the surface does not change with weather the way grass or matting under tension does.
Ongoing Maintenance, By Surface
Natural turf costs ₹1–5 lakh a year to maintain, driven by rolling, mowing, watering, and a skilled groundskeeper, while artificial turf costs ₹20,000–50,000 a year for brushing and sand top-up. Matting costs the least, mostly periodic re-tensioning and eventual replacement. This maintenance gap is the real cost of natural turf, not the construction price.
Natural grass in North India needs rolling two to three times a week to keep the surface compacted and level, mowing two to three times a week during the growing season, and daily watering through the summer months when evaporation is high. Add fertiliser, pest control, and periodic top-dressing with sand and loam, and a dedicated groundskeeper's time, and the annual bill lands at ₹1–2.5 lakh for curation labour and equipment alone, more if the club is chasing a genuinely BCCI-standard surface.
Artificial turf trades that ongoing labour for occasional brushing to keep the fibres upright and topping up the sand infill as it settles, plus the odd seam repair. A ₹20,000–50,000 annual bill is realistic, and there is no watering, mowing, or rolling schedule to manage.
Matting needs almost nothing between sessions beyond re-tensioning, but the mat itself wears and needs replacing roughly every five to eight years, at ₹40–80 per sq ft. Budget for that as a scheduled cost, not a surprise.
Monsoon and Black Cotton Soil
Monsoon and soil type affect each pitch surface differently: natural turf drains slowest and stays wet longest, matting and concrete crack if the base soil beneath them moves, and artificial turf drains fastest and tolerates minor base movement best.
Natural grass pitches take two to four hours to dry after rain even with good drainage, longer without it, which is why subsurface drainage (perforated PVC pipe with a gravel filter, ₹5–15 lakh for a full ground) is not optional in North India's 300–600mm monsoon season. Artificial turf drains in one to two hours thanks to its sand-cushion base.
Black cotton soil, found across parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, swells and shrinks by close to 15% in volume between the wet and dry seasons. Any pitch built on top of it without testing, concrete, matting, or turf base alike, risks the slab cracking or shifting within a year.
A soil test (₹8,000–15,000) tells you whether to excavate and replace the soil to 18–24 inches or design a thicker reinforced base with control joints. Skipping it is the single most common and most expensive mistake we see on North Indian sites.
What Goes Wrong — And What It Costs to Fix
The two most common pitch failures in North India are natural turf that dries out and cracks in summer, and matting left un-tensioned until it causes uneven, dangerous bounce. Both are cheap to prevent and expensive to fix after the fact.
Mini-story — Gurgaon, 2025. Rakesh Malhotra ran a residential-society cricket program on a natural-turf practice pitch and skipped the daily watering schedule through May to save on the water tanker bill, about ₹4,000 a month. By early June the surface had cracked visibly across the batting crease, and re-turfing that section and rebuilding the top layer cost ₹1.8 lakh, against a saving of roughly ₹16,000 over the season.
Mini-story — Ghaziabad, 2024. Coach Deepak Sharma ran a matting pitch at his academy for eight months without re-tensioning it between sessions, and the mat loosened into a visible wrinkle two metres from the bowling crease. A fast bowler's delivery hit the wrinkle, reared unexpectedly, and struck a batsman on the glove hard enough to need medical attention; Deepak re-tensioned and re-anchored the mat for about ₹8,000, a fix that should have been routine maintenance, not an incident response.
Other recurring failures: pouring a concrete base and coating or laying turf on it before the mandatory 28-day cure, which causes blistering and delamination later (₹1–2 lakh to repair); and ignoring thermal expansion joints on a concrete or matting base in North India's 42–48°C swing, which cracks the slab at 8–10 metre intervals within a couple of seasons (₹50,000–1.5 lakh in localised repair).
Which Surface Fits Your Site
Pick natural turf only if match-quality cricket is the actual goal and you can commit to a groundskeeper and ₹1–5 lakh a year. Pick artificial turf for academies and clubs that want realistic practice with low upkeep. Pick matting for the fastest, cheapest practice setup, and accept it is not for match play.
