Four contractors, four different flooring recommendations, and each one insists theirs is correct. That is the normal experience of buying a basketball court in India — and it is because the "right" floor genuinely depends on where the court sits, who plays on it, and what you are willing to spend.
Get the flooring wrong and the consequences are not cosmetic. A school in Noida found that out the hard way when its outdoor court cracked its first monsoon. A club in Chandigarh found it out when its imported maple started cupping in year two. Both mistakes were avoidable, and both are covered below.
You do not need to be an engineer to choose correctly. You need to know what each surface actually does underfoot, what it costs installed — not just per square foot — and where it fails in Indian conditions. That is what this guide covers.
Basketball Court Flooring Options at a Glance
India has four real options: outdoor acrylic, indoor PU (polyurethane), indoor hardwood (maple), and modular interlocking PP tiles. Acrylic and PU each cost ₹8–18 lakh installed; hardwood is ₹15–35 lakh for the floor alone; modular tiles run ₹4–12 lakh and need no curing time at all.

Notice acrylic and PU land at the same price. That surprises most buyers, because acrylic is "just a coating" — but the ₹8–18 lakh figure is the full outdoor build: RCC slab, the acrylic system, hoops, fencing, and lighting, not the ₹80–150 per sq.ft material cost alone.
Outdoor Acrylic Hard Court
Acrylic on an RCC (reinforced concrete) slab is the default for outdoor courts in India, and for good reason — it is UV-stable, it handles direct sun, and a full 28m × 15m FIBA-size court costs ₹8–18 lakh built. The layer count matters: primer, resurfacer, one or two cushion coats, then two or three colour coats, each one applied over a fully cured RCC base.
Skip the cushion coats and you save perhaps ₹50,000, but every hard landing and quick direction change transfers straight into the players' knees. Cushion coats are the cheapest injury-protection upgrade on the whole build.

Indoor PU (Polyurethane) Sports Flooring
PU flooring is a synthetic indoor surface with a built-in cushion layer, laid over a prepared sub-base rather than glued straight to bare concrete — it costs ₹8–18 lakh and gives noticeably softer underfoot feel than acrylic. That cushioning matters for a hall that runs multiple sports or hosts younger players, where joint impact adds up over hundreds of hours a year.
PU is moisture-sensitive during installation and needs a genuinely dry, sealed sub-floor before it goes down. Lay it over a slab that has not been damp-proofed and the coating can delaminate within a season — a common shortcut in budget indoor builds.
Indoor Hardwood: FIBA Requirements
Maple hardwood over a sprung sub-floor is the reference surface for competitive indoor basketball, costing ₹15–35 lakh for the floor alone — before the hall or building shell. FIBA-level performance depends on that sprung sub-floor, not on the maple itself, because it's the shock-absorbing structure underneath that protects players' joints and gives the correct ball bounce.
The number Indian buyers consistently miss is climate control. Maple needs the room held at 35–50% relative humidity year-round. Skip the HVAC and North India's monsoon humidity swings will expand, cup, or gap the boards — turning a ₹20+ lakh floor into a maintenance problem within two playing seasons.
Mini-story — Chandigarh, 2025. A private sports academy installed a ₹22 lakh imported maple floor in a hall with fans but no dehumidification, to save on HVAC. By the second monsoon, humidity swings had cupped the boards along one sideline — high at the edges, low in the middle, a visible ridge across the court. Sanding, re-gluing, and refinishing the affected third of the floor cost ₹6 lakh. A basic dehumidification unit would have run about ₹2.5 lakh.
A domestic PU floor (₹8–18 lakh) is the honest budget alternative when a full HVAC system is not in the plan — less prestige than imported maple, but it will not cup on you.
Modular Interlocking PP Tiles
Modular polypropylene tiles snap together with no adhesive and no curing wait, cost ₹4–12 lakh, and can be lifted and relaid elsewhere — the only flooring on this list that is genuinely convertible and removable. Each tile is roughly 30cm × 30cm and clicks into its neighbours; a damaged tile gets pulled and swapped in minutes instead of a resurfacing job.
Because the tiles float on the sub-base rather than bonding to it, they are largely immune to the base-cracking problem that plagues bonded acrylic surfaces. That single trait makes them the safest bet on a site where the soil has not been properly tested.
North India Heat, Monsoon, and the Base
Every flooring type in this guide sits on a base that has to survive 42–48°C summer surface temperatures and a 25–30°C seasonal swing — and the base, not the surface material, is what usually fails first. Above roughly 42°C, asphalt and unstabilised sub-bases soften; black-cotton and alluvial soils common across Delhi NCR swell and shrink with the monsoon.
Bonded surfaces — acrylic on RCC, PU on a rigid sub-floor — telegraph every base movement straight to the top. Expansion joints every 3–4m and a proper soil test (~₹12,000) are non-negotiable for both. Floating systems, meaning hardwood on a sprung sub-floor and modular PP tiles, absorb more of that movement before it reaches the playing surface.
What Goes Wrong — and What It Costs to Fix
- Skipping the soil test. The single most common outdoor failure. Cost to fix a cracked slab and re-coat: ₹2–4 lakh, against a ₹12,000 test that would have caught it.
- No cushion coat on acrylic. Saves ₹40,000–60,000 upfront; adds joint stress for every player, every session, for the life of the court. Cannot be retrofitted without a full resurface.
- Maple without HVAC. Cupping and gapping within 1–2 monsoons. Partial refinish: ₹4–8 lakh, against a ₹2–3 lakh dehumidification system installed upfront.
- PU laid on a damp sub-floor. Delamination within a season. Full re-lay: ₹3–6 lakh — largely the labour of stripping the failed layer.
- Cheap 8mm-equivalent economy acrylic with no UV stabiliser. Chalks and fades within 2–3 years instead of 8–10, and starts flaking underfoot before it looks bad.
Mini-story — Noida, 2024. A school built an outdoor acrylic court for ₹9.5 lakh and skipped the soil test to save time before the term started. The alluvial sub-base held monsoon water, the slab cracked along the free-throw line by the following June, and the crack telegraphed straight through the acrylic within weeks. Breaking out and re-pouring that section of slab, then recoating, cost ₹3.2 lakh — a third of the original build, for a test that would have cost ₹12,000.
Choosing Flooring for a School or Institution
For most schools, the right choice is modular PP tiles or standard outdoor acrylic — not hardwood, and not premium PU. A school hall usually hosts assemblies, exams, and multiple sports, not just basketball; modular tiles let that hall convert in an afternoon with zero curing downtime, which a bonded PU or acrylic floor cannot match.
Where a school has a dedicated outdoor court and a genuine PE or academy program, acrylic at ₹8–18 lakh is the more durable long-term choice over tiles. Hardwood only makes sense where the institution is running a serious competitive program and has budgeted for HVAC — otherwise it is ₹15–35 lakh of prestige that a school with no dehumidification plan will end up refinishing early.
