A school basketball court is not a smaller club court. It has to survive 400 children a day, pass a facilities committee, and stand for a decade on a budget approved once and rarely revisited. Get the size, surface, or fencing wrong and it shows up as a safety incident, not just a maintenance bill.
This guide is for the person making that call — an administrator, trustee, or facilities head, not a structural engineer. It covers what differs in a school build: size choice, budget-appropriate surfacing, child safety, and how procurement usually works.
Cost at a Glance for a School Court
A full-spec outdoor court (RCC base, UV-stabilised acrylic, hoops, fencing, and recreational lighting) costs ₹8–18 lakh. A bare RCC pad without accessories runs ₹3–8 lakh if the budget has to be phased. Indoor hardwood is ₹15–35 lakh for the floor alone — rarely the right call for a standard school.
Most schools land in the outdoor full-spec bracket because it survives daily use, needs the least specialist upkeep, and does not require a climate-controlled building around it. Modular polypropylene (PP) tiles are a useful middle option at ₹4–12 lakh where a multi-purpose hall needs a surface that goes down fast with no concrete cure to wait for.
Full Court or Half Court: What Fits Your Campus
A half-court (14m × 15m, half the FIBA full court) is the right choice for most schools — it fits daily PE, practice, and 3-on-3 play in a footprint under 20m × 20m. A full 28m × 15m court is worth the extra cost only if the school plans to host inter-school tournaments that need two baskets and regulation dimensions.
Younger students rarely need a full court. A half-court with one basket at the correct 3.05m rim height keeps the game FIBA-compliant while using roughly half the land and budget. Senior inter-school fixtures are the main reason to build the full 28m × 15m layout.
Whatever the size, do not compromise on run-off. Both full and half courts need at least 3.5m of clear space beyond the boundary on every side, so a sprinting student does not run straight into a wall or fence post.
Outdoor Acrylic, Modular Tiles, or Indoor Hardwood
Outdoor UV-stabilised acrylic on RCC is the correct default for nearly every school in India — durable, low-maintenance, and priced for a school budget at ₹8–18 lakh full-spec. Indoor maple hardwood at ₹15–35 lakh (floor alone, before any building) is reserved for schools running a dedicated basketball academy, not standard PE use.

Modular PP tiles suit schools sharing one indoor hall between basketball, badminton, and assemblies. They snap together with no concrete cure required, so a hall gets resurfaced in a holiday instead of a full term, and damaged tiles are swapped individually instead of redoing the whole floor.
Safety for a Court Full of Children
A school court needs taller, sturdier fencing than a private court — at least 3m (10ft) wherever it borders a road, drop, or another play area — plus a surface that reduces fall injury and shaded seating so classes are not standing in direct sun. These are not upgrades; they are the baseline spec for a court used by children.
Fencing height matters more on a school site than almost anywhere, because children chase every stray ball without checking traffic first. Chain-link fencing at 3–3.6m, 45–50mm galvanised mesh on RCC footings, typically costs ₹50,000–1.5 lakh depending on perimeter length.
School in Gurgaon. The facilities head specified 6ft fencing instead of the contractor's recommended 10ft, saving roughly ₹35,000. In the first term, a mis-hit ball cleared the low fence onto the adjacent access road during a break-time game, and a student climbed straight over chasing it as a delivery bike came around the corner. Nobody was hurt, but the school shut the court for two weeks and paid ₹68,000 to add a top rail and extension — almost double what the correct fence height would have cost the first time.
Surfacing plays a safety role too. UV-stabilised acrylic with a cushioned base coat grips better and absorbs more shock than bare or non-UV acrylic, which chalks and turns slick within 2–3 seasons under North India sun. Add a shaded seating strip — even a simple tin-roof shelter — so students are not standing in 45°C summer sun between periods.
The School Procurement Process
Most schools run a tender: a written BOQ separating civil work, surface, equipment, fencing, and lighting, sent to three or more contractors for comparable quotes. A facilities committee or trustee board then approves the budget, often splitting the project across financial years if civil work and surfacing land in different cycles.
The costliest mistake is accepting one bundled "all-inclusive" number instead of a line-item BOQ. Without an itemised breakdown, the lowest bid usually wins by quietly cutting the acrylic layer count or fencing gauge — savings that surface as complaints well after the warranty conversation has gone cold.
School trust in Jaipur. The trust accepted the lowest of three tender bids for a half-court without asking what lighting spec was quoted. The contractor installed two basic floodlights meant for a parking area, not a court. Evening practice became unusable — players lost the ball in the dark after 6pm in winter — and the ₹1.1 lakh lighting line item had to be redone at ₹2.6 lakh for a proper four-fixture, 200-lux layout, the correct recreational spec for school hours.
Ask every bidder for the same BOQ format so quotes compare line by line, not just as a single bottom-line figure. It takes one extra week and is the biggest lever a procurement committee has over quality.
Multi-Use Planning: PE, Tournaments, Assembly
One court can genuinely serve daily PE classes, inter-school tournaments, and morning assembly — but only if it is designed for that from day one. Retrofitting multi-use later, such as adding line markings for other sports or fixing an undersized run-off zone, costs far more than planning it into the original layout.
Full-size acrylic courts double as assembly space because the surface is flat, dry, and drains fast after monsoon rain — as long as the drainage slope was built correctly. Line markings for badminton or volleyball can share the same surface at negligible extra cost if specified at the design stage, not painted on later.
For tournaments, confirm the FIBA 3-point line sits at 6.75m, not the NBA's 7.24m — a mix-up still seen on courts marked by contractors more used to cricket pitches than basketball lines.
What Goes Wrong on School Courts
Three failure modes account for most school court problems in North India: skipping the drainage slope, under-speccing fencing height, and lighting that does not match evening-use hours. Each is cheap to get right up front and expensive to fix once children are already using the court.
- Skipped drainage slope. An outdoor pad needs roughly 1% slope so monsoon water runs off instead of pooling. Skip it to save on civil detailing and the acrylic sits wet after every heavy shower, which peels the surface and turns it slick.
- Under-height fencing. Covered above — the ₹35,000 saved on a shorter fence routinely costs double to fix after a near-miss, plus the closed-court weeks in between.
- Wrong lighting spec. 200 lux is the correct recreational standard for evening school use, not the 2,000-lux broadcast spec for professional arenas. Buying too little or too much both come from never asking the contractor which figure they quoted.
School in Noida. The court was built in April on a bare RCC pad without checking the finished slope, to save roughly ₹1.5 lakh on drainage detailing. By the first monsoon, water pooled along one sideline after every heavy shower, and the acrylic started peeling where it sat wet for days at a stretch. Two students slipped on the damp patch during a PE class, and the school closed the court mid-term to regrade the edge and reapply the acrylic — a repair bill of ₹2.4 lakh, well above what correct drainage detailing would have cost the first time.
All three failures share a pattern: the saving was small and the fix was not. Build the drainage slope, fencing height, and lighting spec into the BOQ from the start and none of these become a mid-term emergency. Questions to Ask Before You Sign
- Is the BOQ itemised into civil, surface, equipment, fencing, and lighting — or is it one bundled number?
- What fencing height and mesh gauge is quoted, and does it meet 3m (10ft) minimum anywhere the court borders a road or drop?
- What lux level is the lighting rig designed for — is it the correct 200-lux recreational spec, not an unnecessary 2,000-lux professional rig?
- Is the drainage slope (roughly 1%) specified in writing, and who is responsible if the surface pools after monsoon?
- Does the quote separate full-court and half-court pricing so the committee can compare both against the available footprint?
