Net height is the single most checked specification at every volleyball tournament in India — from the CBSE nationals to the Senior National Championship. A court that is 3cm off gets flagged on court inspection, disrupts the tournament schedule, and embarrasses the hosting institution. More critically, a net set at the wrong height changes the game itself: too low and attack patterns shift unfairly; too high and the passing game breaks down for recreational players who cannot generate sufficient lift. Getting it right takes less than five minutes with a tape measure — but you need to measure at the correct point.
Official Net Height Reference Table
All heights are measured at the centre of the court to the top edge of the white net tape. The net will sag 2–5cm lower at the centre than at the sidelines — this is normal and expected per FIVB rules.
| Category | Net Height (Centre) | Notes |

The most common measurement error is taking the height from the sideline post or from a point near the sideline. Because the net hangs under tension between two posts, it sags at the centre — which is the reference point, not the highest point.
- Stand at the centre of the net (directly over the centre line).
- Hold a measuring tape vertically from the floor to the top edge of the white net tape — not the cord above the tape.
- The reading should be 2.43m (men) or 2.24m (women) ± 2cm (tournament tolerance is ±5mm for official matches).
- If the net is out of range, adjust the side cables at the post and re-measure.
Never measure at the post. The net is always higher at the post than at the centre due to the sag curve. A net measuring 2.45m at the post may be at 2.40m at the centre — technically under-height for senior men's play.
Real case — Jaipur school tournament, 2024
A CBSE district tournament in Jaipur was briefly disrupted when the court inspector found the net measured 2.43m at the post but only 2.38m at the centre — 5cm below the required height for boys U-18. The host school had set the net using the post measurement. Matches were delayed 40 minutes while the posts were re-tensioned. The fix was straightforward, but the school's reputation for hosting took a hit. Check the centre. Always.
Post Specifications and Placement
Posts must be at least 2.55m tall to accommodate the antenna that extends 80cm above the top of the net tape. Posts should be:
- Positioned 0.5m to 1.0m outside the sidelines — never inside the free zone or flush with the sideline tape.
- Set in concrete footings at least 300mm deep with a sleeve anchor that allows removal for maintenance.
- Equipped with a ratchet or screw-tensioning mechanism so net height can be adjusted precisely without tools beyond the ratchet handle.
- Made from 60mm or 76mm galvanised steel (minimum 2mm wall thickness for outdoor courts).
Real case — Gurgaon residential club, 2025
A society in Gurgaon Sector 56 installed their net posts flush with the sideline to maximise the playing area. During a members-only tournament, a player diving for a ball outside the sideline struck the post and fractured his wrist. The club's insurance did not cover the injury as the posts were not installed to FIVB specifications (0.5m minimum clearance). Remedial post relocation cost ₹38,000 and the club faced a compensation claim.
Beach Volleyball Net Height
Beach volleyball uses the same net heights as indoor volleyball — 2.43m for men and 2.24m for women. The court dimensions differ (beach court is 16m × 8m playing area with a 3m free zone versus the 18m × 9m indoor court), but the net height rules are identical under FIVB Beach Volleyball Rules.
A sand volleyball court in India costs ₹3–8 lakh including the perimeter boards, 100–150mm compacted sand bed, and net posts. The posts for beach volleyball are identical to indoor posts but require a wider footing in sand — typically a 500mm × 500mm concrete block at 600mm depth.
Court Setup Checklist
- ☐ Posts set 0.5–1.0m outside each sideline
- ☐ Post height minimum 2.55m above court surface
- ☐ Net attached to posts at correct tension (net should be taut — no horizontal sag at sideline)
- ☐ Net height measured at centre: 2.43m (men) / 2.24m (women)
- ☐ Net tape level — top edge horizontal when measured at both ends
- ☐ Antennae attached at the intersection of the sideline and net top edge (one on each side)
- ☐ Centre line directly below the net (use plumb line to verify)
- ☐ Attack lines 3m from the centre line on each side
- ☐ Service zones marked behind each end line
Common Mistakes and Failure Modes
- Measuring at the post instead of the centre: Posts are always 2–5cm higher than the centre measurement due to net sag. Tournament disqualification risk.
- Posts too close to the sideline: Player injury risk and rule violation. Minimum 0.5m clearance from the sideline.
- Using fixed-height posts: If a court serves both men and women, fixed posts mean one gender always plays at the wrong height. Always install adjustable posts.
- Net sag greater than 5cm: Caused by using undersized cable or incorrect tensioning. Replace cable with 6mm stainless-coated wire; re-tension to manufacturer spec.
- Antennae missing or incorrectly placed: Antennae must align vertically with the sideline tapes. Missing antennae make out/in calls on sideline shots impossible to judge.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard volleyball net height in India for men?
The standard FIVB net height for men (age 15 and above) is 2.43m, measured at the centre of the court from the floor to the top edge of the net tape. This height applies to all competitive matches in India including school nationals, state championships and senior club play.
What is the standard volleyball net height in India for women?
The standard FIVB net height for women (age 15 and above) is 2.24m, measured at the centre of the court to the top edge of the net tape. For junior girls (U-16 and below) the height may be adjusted to 2.10m–2.20m depending on the specific competition age group.
How do you correctly measure volleyball net height?
Measure from the floor directly below the centre of the net to the top edge of the white net tape. Do NOT measure from the sideline or from the post — those points are higher due to net sag. The centre measurement is the official FIVB reference point. Use a measuring tape held vertically, not diagonally.
Where should volleyball net posts be placed?
Posts must be set 0.5m to 1.0m outside each sideline — never inside the 3m free zone. Post height must be at least 2.55m to accommodate the men's net plus the antennae above the sideline markers. Posts should have sleeve or ratchet systems allowing net height adjustment between men's (2.43m) and women's (2.24m) sessions.
Is beach volleyball net height the same as indoor volleyball?
Yes. Beach volleyball uses the same net heights as indoor volleyball: 2.43m for men and 2.24m for women. The court dimensions differ (beach court is 16m × 8m vs 18m × 9m indoor) but the net heights are identical per FIVB standards.
