
A volleyball court build is not a single continuous pour. It is a sequence of dependent steps, each with minimum waiting periods. Understanding the sequence prevents the most common planning mistake: expecting a court to be playable in 4–6 weeks, scheduling an event around that date, and then watching it slip to 14 weeks.
Site clearance, layout marking, excavation to 250–300mm below finished level, and soil compaction. If a soil test was not done before this stage, surprises here (expansive black cotton soil, high water table, buried debris) add 1–2 weeks. Net post sockets and drainage channels are formed during this phase.
150mm Granular Sub-Base (GSB) material laid in 75mm lifts and compacted to 98% proctor density. Then 100mm Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) or PCC levelling course. Each lift needs 24–48 hours of moisture curing and compaction verification. Rushing this phase creates soft spots that show up as cracking in the finished slab within 2–3 years.
Reinforcement placement (8mm dia at 150mm c/c both ways is the standard for volleyball), formwork, and M25 concrete pour. The pour typically happens in a single 6–8 hour session for a standard 24m × 15m court. Immediately after: water curing begins.
28 days of water curing (or curing compound application). During this period the slab is not loaded or trafficked. This is the single largest time block and cannot be shortened.
Primer coat, then 2–3 coats of acrylic or PU surface with 24–48 hours drying time between each coat. Line marking in regulation colours last.
Net posts set in pre-cast sockets, net tensioned at correct heights (men's 2.43m / women's 2.24m — confirm both with contractor), perimeter fencing, and sports lighting installation if included.
Concrete strength development follows a hydration curve. M25 concrete poured today reaches approximately 65% of its design compressive strength at 7 days, 85% at 14 days, and 100% at 28 days. The remaining 15% strength — which is what allows the slab to handle point loads from athletes and the cyclic stress of a volleyball game — only develops in the third and fourth weeks.
Applying a surface coat at 14 days creates two problems. First, the slab continues to gain strength and emit water vapour (bleed water) from inside the concrete. This vapour pushes against the acrylic coating from below, causing blistering and delamination — often not visible for 12–18 months but happening from day one. Second, the slab's shrinkage movement has not stabilised; micro-cracks can open under the coating.
Is there any legitimate way to accelerate? Silica-fume admixtures and steam curing can reduce cure time to 21 days with lab verification. But this adds cost (₹30,000–50,000 for admixture and testing on a court slab) and requires temperature-controlled curing — rarely practical on Indian construction sites. For 99% of volleyball court builds in India, 28 days is the correct minimum.

In North India the monsoon runs roughly June 20 to September 15. Starting a volleyball court build in this window is not impossible, but it adds 50–75% to the schedule. Concrete pours need a minimum 4-hour rain-free window and 24-hour protection (tarpaulin cover, no direct rain contact) in the first 48 hours. Getting three or four consecutive dry days in North India in July or August is unpredictable.
Acrylic surface application is more restrictive still: the surface must be fully dry (no surface moisture, no rain for 48 hours prior), temperature between 10°C and 38°C, and no rain for 4 hours after application. These conditions are scarce between July and September. Contractors who claim they can apply acrylic in August are either using the wrong product or planning to redo it.
The best strategy: start site work in August (excavation and sub-base are less weather-dependent), pour concrete by mid-September, cure through October, and apply surface in late October or November. This gets you a court by November–December — the beginning of North India's ideal outdoor sports season.
A school in west Delhi contracted a volleyball court build in early August 2024, targeting the court for their November annual-day sports tournament. The contractor assured them 10 weeks. The concrete pour was interrupted by rain twice in September, pushing the pour to late September. With a 28-day cure ending in late October and then acrylic work in November, the court was handed over December 8 — three weeks after annual day. The school's event had to use an older, cracked court at a nearby facility. The lesson: a July–August start needs a January target date, not November.
A sports club in Rohtak, Haryana started their volleyball court build October 5, 2024. Site prep completed by October 12. Concrete poured October 15. Cure completed November 12. Acrylic applied November 14–20. Net system and fencing November 21–27. Handover November 30 — exactly 8 weeks. The contractor and the Stark Sports project manager attributed on-schedule delivery to the ideal curing conditions (18–26°C daytime, no rain) of October–November North India. The court hosted its first state-level tournament in January.
The cure period does not have to be dead time. A well-organised contractor can complete several parallel tasks during weeks 4–8 while the slab cures. Perimeter drainage channel construction can continue around the curing slab. Net post base sockets (pre-cast concrete blocks) can be made and allowed to cure separately. Fencing column footings can be poured. Electrical conduit work for court lighting can be laid around the perimeter. Lighting pole installation (without energising) can be completed.
What cannot happen during cure: any foot traffic or equipment on the slab, any early surface primer, and any construction that generates vibration directly on the slab. A good project manager will have the parallel work list ready on day one of the cure so the team is not standing idle for four weeks.

Loading or surfacing before 28 days creates micro-cracks that do not show immediately but cause premature surface failure within 2–4 years. There is no admixture or fast-track pour that safely shortens this to less than 21 days for structural slabs.
October through March is the optimal window for North India — no monsoon risk, temperatures stay between 10–30°C which is ideal for concrete curing and acrylic application. Avoid starting between June 15 and September 15 in most of North India. If you must build in summer (April–May), start early in April before peak heat; surface application above 38°C causes acrylic to dry too fast and crack.
The civil phase (excavation, sub-base, concrete) has a hard floor of approximately 5–6 weeks once you include the 28-day cure. Surface and finishing work can sometimes be parallelized — for example, net post installation and perimeter drainage can happen during the cure period. A well-organized site can finish in 8 weeks; 6 weeks is not realistic for a new full slab. Sand courts can finish in 5–6 weeks.
