A volleyball court looks simple on paper: pour concrete, paint lines, put up a net. The result of that approach is a court that bubbles, cracks, and floods within two monsoons — and costs ₹1.5–3 lakh to remediate after the fact. What a Volleyball Court Build Involves
A volleyball court build runs 8 sequential stages: soil test, excavation, RCC pour, 28-day cure, acrylic surface system, net post installation, fencing, and lighting. The standard outdoor footprint is 24m x 15m (360 sqm) — the 18m x 9m court plus a 3m free zone on each side. The build takes 8–12 weeks and each stage depends on the previous one completing correctly.
India's governing body is the Volleyball Federation of India under FIVB international rules. Stages 1–3: Ground Up
Stage 1 is a soil test — mandatory in North India because black-cotton (expansive) soil is widespread across Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, and parts of UP. A soil report costs ₹12–18k and determines whether the sub-grade can support a rigid RCC slab or needs a granular fill buffer first. Skipping it is the root cause of most structural slab failures in the first two years of use.
Stage 2 is layout and excavation. The contractor sets out the 24m x 15m footprint, excavates to the design depth, and compacts the sub-base. On black-cotton or other expansive soils, this stage includes removing the problem material and replacing it with compacted granular fill — crushed stone or gravel — before any concrete is placed. The fill prevents soil swelling from reaching the slab and provides a drainage path under the base.
Stage 3 pours the RCC base: M20-grade concrete at 100–150mm thickness with steel mesh reinforcement throughout. M20 (20 N/mm² characteristic compressive strength) is the minimum grade for a sports slab in India. Stage 4: The Cure Wait
Stage 4 is the 28-day RCC cure — the longest single step in the build and the one most often shortened under schedule pressure. Concrete reaches its design strength at 28 days. Applying acrylic coating before that point traps residual moisture in the slab, and that moisture pushes up through the surface in bubbles within months of the court opening.
Curing requires keeping the slab consistently damp throughout the full 28 days. Standard practice is wet hessian covered with polythene sheeting, re-wetted daily. In North India's peak summer months (May–June), water evaporates fast from an exposed slab and crews must check moisture levels twice a day to keep the cure on track.
Noida school, 2024. A school administrator pushed the contractor to begin acrylic coating at day 14 to meet the academic calendar. Moisture bubbles appeared across 60% of the surface within three months of opening. The full acrylic strip and redo cost ₹1.8 lakh — more than the entire original surface budget — and the court was closed for six weeks during term time.
Stages 5–6: Surface and Net System
Stage 5 applies the acrylic surface in four steps: primer coat, resurfacer to level the concrete texture, two colour coats, then line marking. Stage 6 installs net posts in cemented footings 0.7–1m outside the sideline. Stages 7–8: Fencing and Lighting
Stage 7 fences the outdoor court with backstop nets at least 3m behind each end line and sidestop netting along each side. Stage 8 installs lighting at 200–300 lux for recreational evening play and 500 lux for competitive use. Black-cotton soil zones cover large parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi NCR.
