A turf arena next to a row of pickleball or badminton courts is one of the strongest combos in North India right now. More sports, more time slots filled, one plot. But most cost quotes treat the whole site as one build, and that's exactly where it goes wrong.
A turf zone and a hard-court zone are two different systems that happen to sit on the same land. They need different lighting, different drainage, and different upkeep. Blur that line at design stage and you pay for it in year one, usually as a flooded sub-base or a court nobody can see the ball on after 7pm.
You don't need to be an engineer to get this right. You just need to know where the two zones must stay separate, and where their costs genuinely add up. That's what this guide covers.
Why Turf + Hard Courts Get Combined
Operators combine a turf arena with hard courts because it fills more hours on one piece of land: football or box cricket bookings in the evening, badminton or pickleball through the day, and corporate tournaments on weekends, three revenue streams instead of one. The land is the expensive, fixed part; stacking sports on it is how the return improves.
The catch is that "combined" should describe the booking calendar, not the engineering. Treat the turf and the hard courts as two neighbouring builds that share a boundary wall, not one continuous slab with two different toppings.

Two Lighting Circuits, Not One
Turf and hard courts need separate lighting circuits because they need different brightness, different pole heights, and different glare control, and running both zones off one shared design usually leaves one of them badly lit or badly glared. Lux is simply the unit that measures how bright the light is at ground level; higher lux means a brighter, more visible playing surface.
A 5-a-side or full turf field is a big open area, so it needs strong floodlighting — 1,000+ lux from tall poles set well back from the field, the same style used at stadiums. A badminton, pickleball or basketball court is much smaller and needs 400–600 lux for serious play, from shorter poles (typically 6–8m) fitted with shielded, asymmetric fixtures so players looking up for a lob or a serve aren't blinded.
Put both zones on one circuit and the turf's high-output floodlights spill glare across the hard court, or the installer under-powers the turf to protect the court and players lose the ball on a mis-hit pass. A photometric plan — a lighting design mapped zone by zone, not a total wattage number — catches this before installation, not after.
Mini-story — Noida, 2025. An operator building a turf arena with two badminton/pickleball courts alongside it used one contractor's "standard lighting package" for the whole plot. The turf's 1,200-lux floodlights, mounted to cover the field, threw hard glare across the neighbouring court every evening session. Players complained they couldn't track lobs after sunset. Fixing it meant adding louvre shields and repositioning two poles — a ₹2.8 lakh rework on a plot where separate zone-by-zone lighting would have cost roughly the same at the design stage.
Why Drainage Must Stay Separate
Turf sheds far more monsoon water than a hard court because it covers a bigger area and drains through a deeper base — if that runoff is routed anywhere near a hard court's drain line, it backs up and soaks the hard court's sub-base from underneath. The sub-base is simply the compacted layer of gravel and concrete under the playing surface; once it's waterlogged, it stops behaving like a stable foundation.
A full turf field can carry ₹90–270 lakh of drainage and soil treatment on its own, engineered to move a large volume of rainwater away fast. A hard court needs a much smaller system, just a 1% surface slope plus a perimeter drain, sized for a fraction of that volume.
Route the two through a shared pipe, or let the turf zone's grading slope toward the courts, and the hard court's drain gets water it was never sized for. In North India's monsoon (June–September, 300–600mm rain), that mismatch shows up fast — as standing water, or water working sideways into the hard court's base.
What Goes Wrong — and What It Costs to Fix
The most expensive mistake on a turf + hard-court plot is grading the whole site to one drainage plan instead of two, because water finds the hard court's weaker base and softens it from below — a repair that means breaking and re-pouring the slab, not just resurfacing it.
Mini-story — Gurgaon, 2024. A commercial arena built a 5-a-side turf field and three acrylic hard courts on one plot, graded as a single slope toward a shared perimeter drain. After the first heavy monsoon, water pooling off the larger turf catchment backed up into the drain serving the nearest hard court. The court's base stayed wet for weeks and developed surface cracking along one edge by the following summer. Breaking out and re-pouring that section of slab, plus a new independent drain line for the court, cost the operator ₹6.2 lakh — on a court that had cost ₹7 lakh to build in the first place.
Two more failure modes worth flagging: glare bleed (covered above, typically a ₹1.5–3 lakh rework) and mismatched fixture heights — same-height turf and hard-court poles either under-light the field or blind the court, and repositioning poles after footings are cast costs far more than specifying heights correctly up front.
Costing the Combo, Block by Block
There is no single "combo price" for a turf + hard-court complex. You cost each block on its own using its own construction-only rate, then add separate lighting and drainage for each zone, and sum the total. Anyone who quotes one flat number for the whole plot before knowing your exact mix hasn't actually priced it.
Here's a realistic worked example for a mid-size North India plot: one 5-a-side football turf, one box cricket lane sharing the same turf trade, and three hard courts (two dual-marked for badminton and pickleball, one basketball-primary).
