    Acrylic hard court is a layer of UV-stabilised acrylic coating applied over an RCC (reinforced concrete) base. It gives a medium-fast, consistent bounce, needs almost no daily upkeep, and is what most North India clubs actually build — a full turnkey court runs ₹12–18 lakh.

    The bounce is the same every time, in 46°C peak summer or a cool January morning, which is exactly what recreational and league players want. There is no daily labour: no rolling, no watering, just an occasional sweep. The main ongoing cost is resurfacing every 4–8 years at ₹1–2.5 lakh — a small, predictable line item compared to what clay demands every week.

    Clay Courts: Red Clay vs Artificial Clay

    Clay courts give the slowest ball bounce and let players slide into shots, which is why players trained on clay want them specifically. That authenticity costs 30–80% more to build (₹18–30 lakh) and needs a groundskeeper rolling and watering it daily.

    Red clay is crushed brick or stone dust over a compacted base. It needs daily watering to bind the particles and stop dust, and it washes out fastest in heavy rain. Artificial (synthetic) clay uses a more stable crushed material or a clay-look coating that needs less watering, but it still demands regular brushing, line re-marking, and periodic resurfacing — it is lower-maintenance than red clay, not low-maintenance.

    Cushioned Acrylic: The Middle Ground

    Cushioned acrylic adds a shock-absorbing rubber-granule layer beneath the standard acrylic coating, softening impact on knees and ankles without slowing the ball down much. It costs ₹15–22 lakh — the same bracket as synthetic grass — with the same near-zero daily maintenance as standard acrylic.

    For clubs whose real motivation for clay is player comfort rather than the clay-court game itself, cushioned acrylic delivers most of that benefit without a groundskeeper on payroll. For North India, it is often the better recommendation than clay.

    Shoe Type and Player Preference

    Each surface needs a different shoe, and mismatching them wears out both the shoe and the court faster. Hard-court shoes use a tough, flat outsole built for an abrasive surface; clay-court shoes use a herringbone tread that lets players slide instead of catching; turf shoes use small rubber nubs so cleats do not tear the infill.

    A flooded clay court turns to mud and needs days to dry and re-roll before anyone can step back on it.
