The playing dimensions never change. The cost delta comes entirely from what surrounds the court: buffer space, fencing, lighting, and surface grade.
If you run a club, an RWA, or a facility that might one day host real matches, decide that before you pour concrete — retrofitting fencing and lighting later almost always costs more than specifying it right the first time.
Recreational vs Tournament Cost: Quick Answer
A standard RCC-and-acrylic recreational court costs ₹4–6.5 lakh on a 30x60ft footprint. A properly fenced and lit club or tournament-capable court costs ₹7–9 lakh, and a premium build with cushioned surface plus a full lighting rig runs ₹10–12 lakh — both assuming the larger 34x64ft footprint. Every figure here assumes a single outdoor court; always ask what footprint a quoted number is based on, because per-square-foot pricing without a stated area is close to meaningless.
The Court Itself Doesn't Change
The pickleball playing surface is 44ft x 20ft (13.41m x 6.10m) with a net at 34in center and 36in at the posts — identical for a backyard court and an event-hosting one. There is no "tournament-size" pickleball court. The kitchen (the 7ft no-volley zone on each side of the net) and every line dimension stay the same whether three friends play or it hosts a district tournament.
That reframes the whole decision. You never pay more for a bigger or different court — you pay for more space around an identical court, tougher fencing, better lighting, and often a better surface.
A recreational court needs a minimum total footprint of about 30x60ft — 8ft of run-off behind each baseline and 5ft along the sides. A tournament-preferred footprint is 34x64ft, with 10ft behind each baseline and 7ft down the sides. In plain terms, that is the empty space a player needs to chase a lob without slamming into fencing.
At recreational pace, 8ft and 5ft is workable. At competitive pace, with players covering more ground and moving faster, that extra 2–4ft of run-off is the difference between a controlled recovery and a shoulder meeting a chain-link fence at speed.
Fencing and Lighting: What Becomes Non-Negotiable
10ft backstop fencing is the official minimum, and on a recreational-budget build it is sometimes the first thing quietly downgraded. On a tournament-capable court it isn't optional — full perimeter fencing at 10ft, chain-link being the norm in India. The fencing does two jobs: it stops balls flying into neighbouring courts, and on a busy club court it keeps noise and lost balls contained.
Lighting is the bigger functional gap. Recreational play is comfortable at 200–300 lux; competitive and tournament play needs 400–500 lux. Lux measures how much usable light falls on the court surface, not fixture wattage. At tournament pace the ball comes off the paddle faster and lower, especially at the kitchen line, and under-lit courts make it hard to track — size this with a photometric (lux) plan, not a guessed fixture count.
Surface: Cushioned Acrylic for Competitive Play
UV-stabilised acrylic on an RCC base is mandatory either way in India's climate — that part does not change. What tournament-grade builds more often add is a cushioned acrylic or PU layer under the coating, for player joint protection and a more consistent, tested bounce across back-to-back matches.
A bare acrylic-on-RCC surface plays perfectly well for casual and club use. But a tournament format usually means one player or team is on court for match after match in a single day. A cushioned system reduces the joint load on knees and ankles over that stretch, and it holds a more predictable, even bounce than a coating that has started to thin or age unevenly.
Mini-story — Lucknow, 2025. A sports club built two standard acrylic courts for ₹5.2 lakh each, planning casual member play. Six months in, a state-level amateur pickleball body approached them about hosting a two-day open. Players in the later rounds complained of sore knees after four matches on the harder, non-cushioned surface — nothing dangerous, just enough grumbling that the club added a cushioned acrylic topcoat before the next event, at ₹1.4 lakh per court on top of the original build.

Across footprint, fencing, lighting, and surface, the two builds diverge enough that they are really two different projects on two different budgets — not one project with an optional add-on.

What "Tournament-Standard" Doesn't Guarantee
Building to these specs makes your court capable of hosting real competitive play — it is not the same as formal tournament certification. Official sanctioning or inspection sign-off by a governing body is a separate administrative process with its own paperwork and approvals, and we have not found reliably published, verified figures for what that process costs or requires specifically in India.
Be honest with yourself about which one you actually need. If your goal is "our club can credibly host a district-level open on a court that plays true and is safe at competitive speed," this guide gets you there. If your goal is a specific body's formal certification, that is a separate conversation to have directly with that organisation before you finalise a spec.
The Space Tradeoff: Fewer Courts, Higher Spec
On a fixed plot, going tournament-spec usually means fewer courts, not just a pricier version of the same layout — a 30x60ft recreational footprint versus a 34x64ft tournament footprint can be the difference between fitting four courts and fitting three. That is a real tradeoff worth running the numbers on before you commit to a layout.
Mini-story — Chandigarh, 2025. A sports complex had land for four recreational courts at 30x60ft each, budgeted at roughly ₹22 lakh total. When the operator decided to angle the facility toward hosting regional events, the architect reworked the layout to 34x64ft footprints — and only three courts fit on the same plot. The owner chose to build three tournament-capable courts at ₹8 lakh each (₹24 lakh) over four recreational ones, trading one court of daily rental income for the ability to host paid tournament weekends.
What Goes Wrong When You Build the Wrong Spec
Three failure modes show up repeatedly: undersized buffer zones causing player collisions with fencing, recreational-grade lighting that fails a tournament walkthrough, and non-cushioned acrylic causing joint complaints across a multi-match day. None of these are dramatic on day one — they surface exactly when you need the court to perform under pressure.
- Undersized buffer. A 5ft side buffer feels fine for casual doubles. At competitive pace, players chasing wide shots run out of room and collide with fencing — a real injury risk, not a hypothetical one.
- Under-lit courts. 200–300 lux is genuinely fine for evening recreational play. It is very often the specific detail that fails when a tournament organiser or governing body walks the site before an event.
- Hard, non-cushioned surface. Fine for an hour of weekend play. Across a full day of back-to-back matches, players start complaining about knees and ankles — and a club that wants repeat tournament bookings cannot afford that reputation.
Mini-story — Gurgaon, 2024. A residential club built two recreational pickleball courts for ₹5 lakh each — chain-link fencing only on two sides, and standard 250-lux lighting. A year later, a local pickleball association offered to run an inter-society tournament there if the club upgraded fencing and lighting. The retrofit — full perimeter fencing plus upgraded 450-lux poles — cost ₹2.6 lakh per court. Specifying it correctly at build time would have added roughly ₹1.5 lakh per court instead.

- What footprint are you quoting — 30x60ft recreational or 34x64ft tournament-preferred — and does the number include full run-off buffers?
- Is fencing full perimeter at 10ft, or partial/lower on some sides to save cost?
- What lux level is the lighting designed for, and is there a photometric plan, or just a fixture count?
- Is the surface plain acrylic or cushioned acrylic/PU, and what is the added cost per court?
- Are you quoting per court or for the whole facility — and does the quote change if we drop from four courts to three for a bigger footprint?
Get the footprint, fencing, and lighting spec right at build time, and a recreational-looking club can genuinely host real competitive play when the moment comes — without a retrofit bill on top of the original one.
