A pickleball court's slab does not move once it is poured. Get the compass reading wrong at the site-survey stage and you are stuck with a glare problem for the life of the court — no paddle, no coaching, no resurfacing job fixes what the players simply cannot see.
Orientation is a five-minute decision made before anyone breaks ground, and it is the one call that permanently decides whether your court plays well at the hours people actually want to book it. Most Indian players avoid the midday sun and show up early morning or early evening — exactly when a badly oriented court is at its worst.
The short version: align the long axis of the court close to north-south. This guide explains why, what an east-west court costs you, and what to do if your plot will not allow the ideal layout.
Why Orientation Matters for an Outdoor Court
Players stand at each end of a 13.41m × 6.1m court and track a light plastic ball against the fencing and sky behind their opponent. If the low sun sits directly behind that opponent during early-morning or evening play, the ball disappears into the glare — and no amount of skill fixes what the eyes cannot pick out.
Losing sight of the ball for even a fraction of a second, right as an opponent smashes from the kitchen line, turns a rally into a mis-hit or a face shot. Orientation decides how often that happens.

North-South vs East-West: The Standard Recommendation
On a north-south court, players at both ends face north or south, so the sun rises and sets to their left or right rather than straight down the court. On an east-west court, one end faces the sunrise and the other faces the sunset — and both are unplayable for the 60-90 minutes the sun spends low on the horizon.

A diagonal NE-SW layout is a genuine fallback, not a fix — it spreads the glare across both ends instead of concentrating it on one, which is better than pure east-west but still worse than true north-south. Save it for plots that physically cannot take a north-south slab.
India's Sun Path and Peak Play Hours
The sun sits low on the horizon for roughly the first and last 60-90 minutes of daylight — and that is precisely when most Indian pickleball players book, to avoid North India's 42-48°C midday heat. During those windows the light comes in almost horizontal, hitting players at eye level instead of down onto the top of the head.
At midday the sun is high overhead and orientation barely matters — the glare problem all but disappears between roughly 11 AM and 3 PM. But nobody in Gurgaon or Jaipur books a court at noon in May. Demand sits exactly in the low-sun hours: 6-8 AM and 5-7 PM.
This is not only a summer issue. North India's winter sun stays low for longer each morning and evening, so an east-west court has a glare problem across every season — only the exact minutes it affects shift with the calendar.
What Happens on an East-West Court
On an east-west court, the end facing the low sun cannot see the ball during exactly the hours it is most in demand. Players on that end lose smashes and dinks in the glare, rallies stop mid-point, and the booking system quietly steers regulars away from that half of the court.
The commercial effect compounds over time. A club with two courts effectively runs at reduced capacity during its two busiest windows, because one end of each court sits half-usable. Word spreads fast in a residents' WhatsApp group, and the good end books out while the sunny end sits empty.
Mini-story — Gurgaon, Sector 57, 2025. A residents' welfare association built two pickleball courts along an existing boundary wall to keep the layout simple, putting the long axis east-west. Within two months, the 6:30-7:30 AM slot — the most booked window before the summer heat set in — had players on the east end squinting straight into sunrise and mis-timing returns. Facility head Ramesh Yadav's committee added tinted shade-cloth fencing mesh on the east end and shifted the peak booking window by 30 minutes, at a cost of ₹1.6 lakh on top of the original ₹9 lakh, two-court build. Morning bookings recovered only partially — regulars still avoid the east end between 6:45 and 7:15 AM.
Indoor and Covered Courts: A Different Trade-off
Once a court sits under a roof or a shade structure, orientation stops being the deciding factor — the covering blocks the low-angle sun that causes glare on an open court. What replaces it as the design problem is ventilation: a covered court traps heat, and airflow has to be designed in deliberately.
This is why a covered court and an open court are planned differently. A partial shade sail, common on retrofits, is a middle case. It blocks the overhead sun well but does little against the near-horizontal light of early morning and evening, because that light passes underneath the canopy edge rather than through it. Orientation still matters on a partially shaded court — just less than on a fully open one.
Already Built the Wrong Way? Retrofit Options and Costs
You cannot rotate a poured concrete slab. Once an east-west court exists, the realistic fixes are tinted or shade-cloth fencing mesh on the glare-prone end, a partial shade sail over that end, and adjusted play-time recommendations — each one reduces the problem, none of them fully replicates what correct orientation would have given you for free.
- Tinted or shade-cloth fencing mesh. Fitted to the sun-facing end of the fence, this cuts glare intensity without fully blocking sight of the ball. Typical cost: ₹1.5-2 lakh per court, depending on mesh grade and run length.
- Partial shade sail over one end. Blocks a meaningful share of the low-angle light but leaves the last 15-20 minutes before sunset difficult, especially in winter when the sun sits even lower. Typical cost: ₹2-3 lakh per court.
- Shifted play-time recommendations. Free, but it means quietly discouraging bookings during the worst 30-45 minutes on the affected end — a permanent dent in usable hours, not a fix.
Mini-story — Noida, Sector 137, 2024. A pickleball academy run by coach Sanjana Mehta built a single court on a plot that ran naturally east-west, without checking the sun path first. Evening league matches at 5:30-6:30 PM became unplayable on the west end within weeks — players lost overhead smashes in the glare, and two league nights were cancelled outright. A partial shade sail over the west end cost ₹2.1 lakh to retrofit; it cut the glare enough to resume league play but still leaves the final 20 minutes before sunset difficult through the winter months.

How to Check Orientation Before You Build
Before the layout is marked on the ground, walk the plot with a compass — a phone compass app works fine — and confirm the long axis can run within roughly 10-15 degrees of true north-south. Then walk the same plot near sunrise and sunset on a clear day and watch where the shadows actually fall.
- Check the compass bearing of the plot's long dimension before finalising the layout.
- Walk the site at sunrise and again at sunset to see exactly where glare lands.
- If a boundary wall, building, or tree already shades one end, place that end on the west, not the east — it buys back the evening slot.
- If true north-south is not possible, aim for the NE-SW diagonal fallback rather than pure east-west.
- If shade is planned either way, confirm with your contractor whether it should also be designed for ventilation, not just sun-blocking.
Mini-story — Jaipur, Vaishali Nagar, 2025. A sports club's plot ran diagonally to true north, and the easy option was to align the court parallel to the boundary wall, an east-west-leaning axis. Site engineer Arjun Malhotra walked the plot with a compass before the layout was marked, rotated the court 18 degrees off the boundary to bring it within 10 degrees of true north-south, and adjusted the fence plan to fit. The rotation added zero material cost and one extra day of layout planning. Eighteen months on, the club runs 6 AM to 9 PM bookings with no glare complaints on record.
Checking orientation costs nothing beyond a site visit with a compass. Getting it wrong costs ₹1.6-2.5 lakh in retrofits per court — and even then, only partially fixes what a correct layout would have solved from day one.
