Many existing multipurpose halls, converted warehouses, and newly built sports rooms have 4.5m ceilings — adequate for badminton in a pinch, completely inadequate for pickleball lob shots. The lob is not an advanced technique; it is a standard shot in doubles strategy. At 4.5m, 40–60% of lob shots hit the ceiling, fundamentally changing the game.

    The minimum clear height for recreational indoor pickleball is 5.5m (18 feet). Clearance is measured to the lowest obstruction — a beam, duct, or light fitting hanging below the structural ceiling counts against the clear height. If your planned hall has 5.8m structural height but 300mm of HVAC ductwork, effective clear height is 5.5m — right at the minimum.

    For competitive or club-grade facilities where members take the game seriously, design to 6.1m (20 feet) clear height. Never compromise on clear zones in an indoor setting — players move fast and slide, and the floor-to-wall impact at 1.5m/s with no margin is a serious injury risk.

    For multi-court layouts: a 2-court side-by-side configuration requires approximately 20m × 20m (with a shared 2m separation between courts instead of two full 1m margins). Four courts in a 2×2 grid fit in a 40m × 20m hall. Four courts in a single row fit in a 40m × 12m hall — a more unusual shape but workable in narrow rectangular buildings.

    In India, the most common indoor pickleball conversions are from existing badminton halls. A regulation badminton hall is typically 30m × 15m for 4 courts — which fits two pickleball courts with excellent clear zones. Marks can be repainted over existing badminton lines using contrasting colours without confusion, since the sports use different ball types and most players easily distinguish court lines within a session.

    Avoid direct-on-slab concrete or terrazzo finishes — both are dangerously hard for falls and have inconsistent ball bounce. Rubber flooring (>10mm) dampens ball bounce and is also unsuitable for competitive play.

    Lighting: Lux Levels, Colour Temperature, Placement

    Pickleball moves faster than badminton in the body (side-to-side) dimension and slower in the vertical. The lighting challenge is tracking a 26g ball moving at 40–80 kph across a blue or green surface. At less than 400 lux, the ball is hard to track in fast rallies. At 500–750 lux with the right colour temperature, tracking becomes natural.

    Colour temperature matters more than most facility designers realise. Warm white LEDs (2700–3000K) reduce contrast between the yellow-green pickleball and the court surface. Cool white (5000–6500K) LEDs increase apparent contrast and make the ball easier to track. The difference is visible even to amateur players within a few minutes of play.

    LED panel placement: mount at 7–8m height, angled 20–25° from vertical to minimise glare into players' eyes during overhead shots. Avoid mounting directly over the non-volley zone ("kitchen") where players look up frequently.
