A housing society in Gurgaon spent ₹19 lakh on a 4-court pickleball complex, then watched the main breaker trip the first evening every court's lights came on at once. Nobody had checked whether the existing connection could carry four courts running together, only whether it could carry one.
Electricity is the line item people budget for last and regret first. It looks simple on a quote, a few LED floodlights and some cable, until the lights are too dim to play under or the whole system trips on a monsoon evening.
You don't need to be an electrician to get this right. You need to know how much power your court actually draws, what kind of connection that requires, and the two safety devices that are never optional. That's what this guide covers, with real numbers for pickleball's smaller footprint.
Single-Court Load Calculation
A single pickleball court's floodlighting draws roughly 3–8 kW of connected load: about 3–4 kW for recreational lighting at 200–300 lux, and 5–8 kW for club or competitive play at 400–500 lux. A 4-court complex needs 12–32 kW combined once every court runs lights at the same time.
Lux is simply how much light actually lands on the court surface, not the wattage printed on a fixture box. Recreational play needs a minimum 200–300 lux; club and competitive play needs 400–500 lux, delivered by 4–10 LED floodlights on poles roughly 6–8m high.
Translating that into load: a recreational setup with 4–6 fixtures at roughly 600–700W each comes to about 3–4 kW. A club-standard setup with 6–10 fixtures at 700–900W runs closer to 5–8 kW. These wattage and fixture-count figures are reasonable estimates for pickleball's smaller court — always confirm exact numbers against your supplier's photometric plan before signing.
LED Wattage and Fixture Count
The load calculation is fixture wattage times fixture count, and getting either number wrong throws off the whole circuit design. LED is now standard because it delivers the same lux at roughly a third of the power draw of older metal halide fixtures.
Six 700W LED floodlights come to 4.2 kW of connected load, a straightforward multiplication that vendor quotes routinely skip. Many quotes simply say "6 x LED floodlights" with no wattage figure and no lux guarantee attached. Ask for both before you sign anything.
Metal halide is rarely specified on new pickleball builds in India now. LED's lower running cost usually recovers the extra equipment cost within a season or two of regular evening play.
Single-Phase vs Three-Phase Power
A single court's 3–8 kW load usually fits comfortably on a single-phase connection, which most Indian DISCOMs sanction up to roughly 7–11 kW depending on the state. Add a second, third, or fourth court to the same meter and the combined load crosses that ceiling fast, making a three-phase connection the safer, and often mandatory, choice.
In plain terms: single-phase is the ordinary household-style supply carried on two wires, fine for one court's lighting. Three-phase splits the load across three separate live wires, which is how India's grid moves larger amounts of power without overloading any single wire, the standard choice once a multi-court facility's lighting runs off one connection.
Check your sanctioned load at the meter before the design is finalised, not after the court is built. A property already running close to its limit on other loads, an irrigation pump, clubhouse air-conditioning, may need a DISCOM load enhancement before court lighting can be added safely.

Manav Sethi's residents' welfare association built a 4-court outdoor complex on the society's existing single-phase connection, assuming the courts would rarely run all their lights together. Wiring, the distribution panel, conduit, and earthing for a single court typically add ₹35,000–70,000 to the build, separate from the floodlight fixtures and poles, which are usually priced as their own line item. That is roughly 5–10% of a ₹2.5–9 lakh single-court budget, a modest slice, but one that gets rushed or under-specified often.
The correct spec is a dedicated sub-panel with an MCB (a breaker that trips on overload) and an ELCB, copper cable sized for the actual run length and not just the load, and weatherproof conduit for any stretch outdoors. Cheaper quotes cut corners here first, because a thinner cable and a shorter conduit run are invisible once the concrete and paint go down.
