    Most pickleball court problems in India are not visible on handover day. The paint is fresh, the net is up, the first few matches look fine. Then the first real monsoon hits, or the first full Delhi summer, and a mistake that cost nothing to avoid starts costing lakhs to fix.

    Mistake 1: Wrong Dimensions or Footprint

    Skimp on run-off space and players chasing deep shots slam into the boundary fence mid-rally — real doubles play becomes unplayable. The court itself is 6.1m × 13.7m (20ft × 44ft), but you also need at least 1.83m (6ft) of run-off at the sides and 4.57m (15ft) behind each baseline, the buffer contractors trim first to save slab area.

    Rohan Malhotra runs a sports club in Sector 57, Gurgaon. His contractor poured the 6.1m × 13.7m rectangle correctly but left only 1.2m behind each baseline instead of the recommended 4.57m.

    Within a month, players chasing deep returns and overhead smashes were clipping the boundary fence mid-swing. Extending the slab by the missing run-off on both ends cost ₹1.8 lakh on a court that had cost ₹5.2 lakh to build — a fix that would have added roughly ₹40,000 if planned into the original pour.

    Mistake 2: Inadequate Base for Local Soil

    Skip proper base prep and the slab cracks or shifts within 1–2 monsoons as the soil beneath it swells and shrinks. Contractors used to building floors, not sports slabs, often pour a thin RCC (reinforced cement concrete) slab on an uncompacted sub-base without accounting for that movement. Fixing it means breaking and re-pouring: ₹2–3 lakh, against an original base cost of roughly ₹1.2–1.8 lakh.

    The correct spec for India is a minimum 100mm RCC slab (M25 grade) over a 100mm compacted stone sub-base, increased to 125mm slab and 150mm sub-base on expansive black-cotton or clay soils common across Delhi NCR and UP. Skip the soil test and skip proper compaction, and the ground itself does the damage until the slab cracks along its joints.

    Priya Bhatia, secretary of a housing society in Noida Sector 137, approved a court build without a soil test to save ₹12,000. The alluvial soil beneath had a high water table in monsoon season, and the sub-base was never properly compacted. Cracks appeared along the baseline within eight months.

    Mistake 3: Wrong Surface Spec for Heat

    Non-UV-stabilised acrylic coating is chosen to save ₹30,000–50,000 on a standard court, and it chalks, fades, and loses its grip within 18–24 months under North Indian summer conditions, where a dark court surface can exceed 60°C. UV-stabilised acrylic (rated 5,000+ UV hours) costs marginally more and lasts 5–7 years in the same conditions.

    This mistake is invisible at handover — both coatings look identical on day one. It shows up in the second summer, when the cheap coating starts turning powdery underfoot and ball bounce becomes inconsistent.

    Mistake 4: Drainage Design Errors

    Skip the drainage slope and monsoon rain sits on court for 3–4 days instead of draining in 1–2 hours, delaminating (peeling) the coating at the low points. A flat slab is the most common drainage error in India — the RCC slab needs a 1% slope, about 5.3cm of fall, built in at pour stage, not patched in later.

    Building the slope in correctly costs ₹15,000–20,000 at pour time. Retrofitting a perimeter channel into an already-poured slab means cutting the edge, excavating, pouring the channel, and patching and recoating — a job that costs ₹60,000–1.2 lakh.

    Mistake 5: Wrong Net Height

    Set the net at tennis height and every serious player notices immediately — shot selection changes and rallies feel wrong. A pickleball net sits at 86cm (34in) at the centre and 91cm (36in) at the posts, two inches lower at centre than tennis; courts converted from tennis or badminton, or built by a contractor without pickleball-specific experience, sometimes get set up at the wrong height.

    The fix is usually just re-tensioning the centre strap, which costs nothing. But a fixed-height or budget net-post system that cannot be adjusted correctly may need replacing outright, at ₹8,000–25,000 depending on grade.

    Always ask your contractor to measure and show you 86cm at centre before signing off — it takes five minutes.
