
Every sport on a multi-use court has a specific, non-negotiable net height. Using the wrong height — even 5cm off — produces noticeably wrong gameplay. Spikes that should go in clip the top tape. Clears that should fall in land out. Players adapt, but they also stop coming back.

Note that volleyball net height differs by gender — always give both. On a multi-use court that hosts both men's and women's volleyball, the net system must reach both 2.43m and 2.24m precisely. A system that only adjusts to pre-set notches at 2.43m and 2.24m (skipping intermediate heights) is preferred over one that theoretically covers everything but requires precise manual measurement every time.
There are three mechanical approaches to height adjustment in multi-sport net systems sold in India:
Telescoping post with pin-lock: The inner post slides inside the outer post and locks at fixed height presets using a spring-loaded pin. Height change takes 2–5 minutes. Accuracy is preset-limited — heights are fixed at the pin positions, which must correspond exactly to regulation heights. This is the most common type at mid-range price points and works well for facilities that only need regulation heights.
Ratchet winder mechanism: A side-mounted winder gear cranks the inner post up and down through a rack-and-pinion mechanism. Height is continuously variable and settable to any value, with a built-in height indicator. Takes 3–7 minutes to change. More expensive than pin-lock but allows setting non-standard heights (useful for junior volleyball, standing wheelchair players, etc.).
Socket-insert post system: Posts are completely removable and stored off-court. Different fixed-height posts are inserted for different sports. No adjustment mechanism — each post is one height only. Very durable (no moving parts to fail) but requires post storage space and takes 10–15 minutes to swap because the posts are heavy and must be carried. Most common for facilities where sport changes happen less than daily.
The floor socket is the most underspecified component of multi-sport net installations in India. A mis-positioned, under-depth, or non-vertical socket causes problems that cannot be cheaply fixed after the slab is poured.
The correct specification: cast-iron or 316 stainless steel sleeve, minimum 100mm internal diameter (to accept standard 89mm–95mm post OD with clearance for alignment adjustment), set in the slab to 300mm minimum depth using M30 concrete around the sleeve, with the sleeve centreline vertical to within 1°. A cap screw (flush-fitting, non-trip) must be installed when the socket is not in use — any exposed recess at floor level is an ankle injury waiting to happen.
Socket positioning must accommodate multiple sports from shared anchor points. The ideal configuration places two socket pairs on the court: one at the volleyball/pickleball net line position (same position for both sports), and one at the badminton net line position (which differs from volleyball net position). For a 30m × 15m multi-sport court, four sockets (two pairs) cover volleyball, pickleball, and badminton from the same court markings.

For most residential and school multi-sport courts in India, the mid-range tier (₹35,000–60,000) provides the right balance of durability, adjustment precision, and total cost. Budget systems have winder mechanisms that corrode at weld points within 3–4 monsoons in North India — a cost-of-ownership problem.
The most common failure is socket misalignment. If the socket is set at 2° off vertical, the post leans. A leaning post applies uneven tension to the net — one side of the net is tight, the other is slack. In volleyball, this affects ball interaction at the net. In badminton, a slack net dramatically changes shuttle trajectory at mid-court. The fix — resetting a socket in a finished slab — requires coring out the socket area, removing the old sleeve, setting a new one, and concrete patching. Cost: ₹8,000–15,000 per socket, plus the risk of visible patching on the court surface.
The second common failure is winder corrosion. Budget and some mid-range winder mechanisms use unpainted or poorly coated carbon steel in the gear housing. After 2–3 monsoons, the winder seizes or becomes stiff — the height-change feature that justified the system cost no longer works. The fix: disassemble, clean, regrease, and re-coat — or replace the post pair entirely. Budget systems with seized winders are typically replaced rather than repaired.
The third failure is net fabric degradation in UV. India's UV index reaches 11–12 from April to September. Cheap polyethylene net fabric (common in budget systems) becomes brittle and frays within 3–4 years outdoors. Specify UV-stabilised polyethylene or PVC-coated nylon fabric for outdoor multi-sport courts. Net replacement cost: ₹3,000–8,000 per net, but more often it is done ad-hoc rather than on schedule, with frayed nets used in play.
A residential school in Gurugram uses a 30m × 15m multi-sport court for afternoon programmes that rotate across volleyball, badminton, and pickleball on the same day. Not simultaneously — the playing nets for volleyball and badminton are different widths (volleyball 9.5m × 1m mesh, badminton 6.1m × 760mm). However, a single adjustable post system can hold different nets depending on the sport being played, with the net changed at the same time as the height is adjusted. Some facilities keep two nets on the same posts — a wider volleyball net that drops to badminton height — but the net dimensions and tension requirements differ enough that this produces substandard play quality in both sports.
Floor sockets for multi-sport posts should be 100mm internal diameter, cast-iron or stainless steel sleeves, set in concrete to 300mm depth, with a flush-fitting screw cap when not in use.
