Most 5-a-side and 7-a-side arenas across Gurgaon, Noida and Jaipur get built with turf, fencing and drainage speced carefully, and lighting bolted on at the end as a fixed line item nobody questions. That's a mistake. Floodlighting is what turns a daytime asset into one that earns money from 6am to 11pm, and it's also where a contractor can quietly cut pole height, fixture quality and IP rating without anyone noticing until the first monsoon or the first neighbour complaint.
How Much Light a Football Turf Actually Needs
Too little light and players misjudge headers, mishit crosses, and mistime tackles near the touchline, a real injury risk, not just poor play. Recreational 5-a-side and 7-a-side football needs roughly 200-300 lux; semi-competitive matches (corporate leagues, academy fixtures, real pace) need 300-500 lux. These two tiers cover almost every commercial arena built in India.
Lux measures how much usable light actually lands on the turf, not how bright a fixture looks standing underneath it. At the low end of the recreational band, players can see the ball well enough for a casual weekday game, but push into competitive territory — sprints, first-touch control, a ball arriving at pace out of a darker patch near the touchline — and 200 lux stops being enough.
Professional and TV-broadcast pitches move into 500-1000+ lux territory, but that tier isn't relevant to almost any commercial 5-a-side or 7-a-side arena in India; don't let a contractor upsell you into it. Pole Height, Count and Placement
Get pole count or placement wrong and you get dark corners near the goalmouth, glare in a goalkeeper's eyes, and an expensive rewiring job later. A 5-a-side arena (45m x 25m footprint) typically needs 4-6 poles at 6-8m height. A 7-a-side arena (75m x 50m footprint) needs 8-10 poles at similar height.
Placement matters as much as pole count. Poles bunched on two long sides throw light at a shallow, near-horizontal angle by the time it reaches the far touchline, the same angle that produces glare in a goalkeeper's eyes on a high ball and long shadows across the goalmouth. Spreading poles around all four sides, angled slightly inward toward the pitch centre, removes those hard shadow bands and matters more on a 5-a-side pitch than a full-size ground, where there's no spare width to absorb an uneven layout.

Chinese fixtures typically run ₹8,000-15,000 per unit; better-efficiency branded fixtures cost more but need fewer poles for the same coverage, and usually carry a better IP (Ingress Protection) rating, the code for how sealed a fixture is against dust and water. IP65 or higher is the practical minimum anywhere in North India; IP54, common on cheap imports, isn't built for wind-driven monsoon rain.

An RWA complaint over glare can cost you a booking slot and force an expensive re-aim after poles are already in concrete, worst in dense housing societies where a boundary wall sits 10-15m from a neighbour's balcony. The fix: a sharp beam cutoff, downward tilt, and louvre shields on any pole facing a building, decided before installation.
A beam cutoff means the fixture stops throwing light past a set angle instead of scattering it sideways. Combined with aiming the brightest part of the beam straight down onto the pitch rather than outward "for extra coverage," this keeps light off nearby windows without cutting lux on the playing surface. It matters most on tight urban plots in Gurgaon, Noida and Faridabad, less so where the nearest structure is 50m or more away.

What Extra Evening Hours Are Actually Worth
Skip evening lighting and your arena's earning window ends at sunset; light it properly and you can add two to three bookable slots a night. Treat any revenue figure as an estimate: at typical rates of ₹300-800 an hour, extra slots add weekly revenue on paper, but uptake depends on demand, and payback should never be assumed inside 24 months.
What Goes Wrong When Lighting Is Underspecced
Three mistakes account for most of the lighting problems on Indian football turfs: underspeccing lux to hit a pole-count budget, fitting a low IP rating that can't survive monsoon humidity, and aiming fixtures without checking what's on the other side of the boundary wall. Each is cheap to fix at design stage and expensive to fix after handover.
- Underspecced lux. A quote promising "200 lux" that delivers under 150 lux once measured leaves dark patches near goalmouths and touchlines: a real injury risk on mistimed challenges, and a fast way to lose evening bookings.
- Low IP rating. IP54 fixtures sold as "outdoor rated" fail inside a single monsoon once water reaches the driver housing, typically ₹40,000-80,000 to replace, as the Noida story above shows.
- Poor pole placement or aim. Fixtures bunched on two sides or angled outward create shadow zones and neighbour glare complaints, both fixable, but not cheaply, once poles are already in concrete.
- Lighting bundled into one "electricals" line. A quote that doesn't separate pole count, height, wattage and IP rating from the rest of the electrical work can't be verified before signing.
- Wattage-only claims with no lux plan. "Six 300W floodlights" says nothing about actual coverage. Ask for a lux plan, not a fixture count.
Questions to Ask Before You Sign
- What lux level does the design target, 200-300 or 300-500, and is there a photometric layout, not just a pole count?
- How many poles, at what height, and placed exactly where on the perimeter?
- What IP rating are the fixtures, and is it genuinely suitable for monsoon exposure (IP65 or higher)?
- Has fixture aim been checked against neighbouring buildings, especially on a tight urban plot?
- Is lighting itemised separately from the rest of the electrical work, with fixture wattage and lumen output shown?
