Cricket pitch preparation is a one-time soil test and sub-base cost; maintenance is the bill that runs every year after. A natural grass pitch costs ₹1.5–3 lakh a year to curate — rolling, mowing, watering, a groundskeeper — while artificial turf costs ₹30,000–50,000 a year, mostly brushing and sand top-up. Almost no contractor puts that gap in front of you before you choose a surface.

- Drainage slope (1–1.5%). Moves monsoon water away from the pitch instead of letting it pool.

A match-quality natural grass wicket needs rolling 2–3 times a week, mowing 2–3 times a week, top-dressing every 4–6 weeks, and daily watering through summer. Skip any of these for a season and the pitch stops behaving like a match surface.
Bermuda grass is the default choice for North India: it tolerates 45°C+ heat and drought better than Rye, which is used only as a winter overseed (October–February) in Delhi/NCR.
- Rolling: a 50–100 tonne roller, 2–3x/week, compacts the surface and fills small depressions before they become bounce inconsistencies.
- Mowing: 2–3x/week, holding a 10–13mm stack height for match play.

Artificial Turf: What Upkeep Actually Looks Like
Artificial turf maintenance is regular brushing to keep the fibres standing upright, periodic sand infill top-up, and occasional seam checks — no mowing, no rolling, no daily watering. That short list is the entire routine, and it is why artificial turf's annual maintenance bill runs at roughly a tenth of what natural grass costs to keep match-ready.
The one build-time decision that affects maintenance later: artificial turf must be UV-stabilised for North India, or it fades and cracks in 3–5 years instead of lasting its full 8–12. Confirm that spec before signing, since unstabilised turf is a common corner cut.

Over ten years, natural grass maintenance adds up to ₹15–30 lakh; artificial turf adds up to ₹3–5 lakh — a gap of roughly ₹12–25 lakh across the pitch's working life, on top of whatever the build itself cost. Almost no one quoting a cricket pitch in India puts that number in front of a buyer before they commit to a surface.
That does not make artificial the automatic answer. Bounce and feel on natural grass are still what state and BCCI-level cricket is judged on, and a well-curated Bermuda wicket hosts matches for 10–15 years. A school, academy, or box-cricket operator prioritising practice volume over feel is often better served by turf's lower bill. Run both numbers against what the facility is actually for.
