- Pitch table has lost consistent bounce. Rolling and mowing on schedule but batsmen still complain about unpredictable pace off the surface — the base under the grass, not the grass itself, has likely gone.
- Outfield has dead patches or uneven levels. Fielders report bad-bounce complaints in specific spots, season after season, no matter how much top-dressing goes down.
- Drainage floods for days, not hours. A properly drained ground clears in 2-4 hours. If yours sits wet for 3 days or more after heavy rain, the pipe network or grading underneath has failed.
