Cricket, which hits a hard ball harder than almost any other sport we build for, often gets whatever chain-link fencing was left over from another job.

    That gap costs money twice — once on the netting itself, and again when it fails. Three completely different jobs get lumped together under "cricket fencing": the backstop behind a full ground, the cage around a practice-net lane, and the enclosure around a box-cricket arena. Each needs a different height, a different mesh, and a different budget.

    Three Different Fencing Jobs, Not One

    Cricket facilities need three distinct netting systems — full-ground backstop netting, practice-net lane cages, and box-cricket boundary enclosures — and pricing all three as one line item is the most common mistake owners make. Each protects against a different shot at a different distance, so a spec that is correct for one is often unsafe or a waste of money on another.

    A full ground's backstop only has to catch mishits and top-edges flying 60–90m from the bat. A practice-net cage has to contain a ball delivered at full pace from 3–5m away, at close range, over and over through a training session. A box-cricket enclosure sits somewhere between the two — the boundary is only 40–50 feet away, so nearly every shot is a near-miss on the fence.

    Full Ground Boundary & Backstop Netting

    A full cricket ground needs backstop netting roughly 12 feet (3.6m) high directly behind the wicketkeeper, plus low sideboards around the rest of the boundary — not full-perimeter fencing. The area behind the keeper is the only part of the ground where balls regularly arrive at head height and near-full speed; everywhere else along the boundary, the ball is travelling along the ground or in an arc a fielder can judge, so a sideboard is enough to mark the rope and stop a rolling ball.

    Mini-story — Gurgaon, Sector 57. A residential society built a full-size ground for members and fenced the backstop with 6-foot chain-link left over from a boundary-wall project, instead of the standard 12-foot netting. Eight months in, a top-edge cleared the low fence during a weekend match and shattered the windshield of a car parked in the adjoining lot. The owner paid ₹42,000 for the windshield and body repair, then another ₹1.6 lakh to re-net the backstop properly to 12 feet with knotted nylon mesh — nearly four times what correct netting would have cost at build.

    Practice-Net Lane Cage Netting

    A practice-net lane needs full enclosure on both sides, usually to 10–12 feet, because the batsman stands 18–20m from a bowler delivering at pace inside a lane barely 3m wide — there is no boundary rope to absorb a mishit. The mesh has to be finer and tighter than backstop netting: a knotless nylon weave that stops the ball dead at close range without letting it punch through a loose knot or a slack panel.

    This netting is not a separate line item from the lane cost — it is embedded in it.     Mini-story — Faridabad. A cricket academy fitted its four-lane practice facility with the cheapest monofilament netting available, around ₹90,000 for all four lanes, to undercut the knotted-mesh quote. A pre-monsoon dust storm in June tore three of the four lanes within eighteen months — thin monofilament cannot take repeated wind-loading the way heavier knotted nylon does. Re-netting all four lanes properly cost ₹2.6 lakh, almost triple the original spend, plus two weeks of lost coaching revenue while the cage stood unusable.

    Box-Cricket Boundary Enclosure

    A box-cricket arena needs continuous netting around the entire perimeter, not just a backstop, because the boundary sits only 40–50 feet from the bat instead of 65–90m — every side is effectively a backstop.     Mini-story — Jaipur. A box-cricket arena skipped the overhead netting above its side walls to save around ₹60,000, leaving a gap where lofted shots could clear the enclosure onto an adjoining walkway. A pedestrian was struck and needed stitches; the owner settled the medical bill and legal costs for ₹1.35 lakh, then spent another ₹85,000 closing the gap with proper overhead netting — a ₹2.2 lakh bill against the ₹60,000 he thought he was saving.

    GI Posts vs Powder-Coated Steel for North India

    Powder-coated mild steel posts are usually enough inland across Delhi NCR, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, where the climate is dry with no coastal salt in the air — but galvanised GI posts are the safer default for netting that stands outdoors year-round. Galvanising coats the steel in zinc, which sacrifices itself to corrosion instead of the steel underneath; powder coat is only a surface film, and once a fastener hole or a ball-impact scratch breaks it, rust starts underneath where you cannot see it.

    The gap matters most where netting stands exposed for years through repeated monsoon wetting and drying — practice-net cages and full-ground backstops especially. GI costs somewhat more upfront, but a rusted-through post failing mid-season is a far more disruptive fix than the difference in post cost at build.

    What Goes Wrong — and What It Costs to Fix

    Four failure modes account for almost every cricket-fencing problem we see in North India: undersized netting, cheap mesh that tears in wind, corroded posts, and nets placed too close to the run-up. Each is cheap to prevent and expensive to fix after the fact.

    • Undersized or missing netting. A gap left to save cost, as in the Jaipur story above, turns into a property-damage or injury claim that dwarfs the saving — typically ₹50,000 to ₹3 lakh or more once repair, replacement netting, and any settlement are added up.
    • Cheap monofilament mesh. Thin, low-cost netting tears in the pre-monsoon dust storms (locally called loo winds) common across Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. Re-netting after a storm costs ₹50,000–1.5 lakh, plus lost revenue while the facility is unusable.
    • Corroded, unprotected posts. Mild steel without galvanising or intact powder coat starts rusting within 3–4 monsoon cycles in humid pockets, weakening the frame that holds the netting taut. Replacing posts and re-tensioning netting runs ₹1–2 lakh.
    • Nets too close to the run-up. When a practice lane is laid out with an undersized run-up, bowlers hit the netting at pace and risk injury on the follow-through. Rebuilding the netting position to a proper 5–10m run-up costs ₹50,000–1 lakh.

    None of these are exotic problems — they are the same shortcuts repeated across budgets that skip fencing to protect the pitch or turf spend. Get the height, mesh, and post right for the context you are building, and the netting should outlast the surface it protects.
