A club in Jaipur once had its boundary rope measured off a photo of an IPL ground. Nobody checked that the site itself was almost 20 meters short of a real boundary radius on one side. The rope went up anyway, in the wrong place, three days before the first match.
Cricket ground dimensions look simple — everyone knows "22 yards" — but the pitch is the one number that never changes. Everything around it, the square, the outfield, the land you need, is a design decision, and getting it wrong costs real money to undo.
You do not need to be an engineer to get this right. You need the real numbers and a sense of what happens when someone skips them. That is this guide.
The Pitch, Square & Boundary — Real Numbers
The cricket pitch is fixed at 22 yards (20.12m) long by 10 feet (3.05m) wide — this never changes at any level of play. Around it sits a mown "square" of roughly 27m × 27m, and beyond that the outfield runs out to a boundary rope typically 65–90m from the pitch center.
Think of it as three rings. The pitch is where the ball actually bounces — flat, prepared, exact to the inch. The square is the wider block of closely mown turf that several pitches can be cut from in rotation, so groundstaff can rest one pitch while using another. The outfield is everything else inside the boundary rope, where fielders chase the ball.
Here is the part most owners get wrong: the 65–90m boundary is a range, not a rule. International grounds sit near 90m because BCCI and ICC require it for the top level of play. A club or academy ground in Gurgaon or Noida built on 1.5–2 acres will naturally land closer to 65–70m, and that is completely normal — it is not an inferior ground, it is a smaller-footprint ground built for its purpose. The mistake is not building a smaller boundary. The mistake is not deciding on your target radius before you pour any concrete.
Which Way Should the Pitch Face
Orient the pitch so neither end points straight at the setting sun — roughly a north-south to northeast-southwest axis works for most of North India. This single decision, made on day one of site layout, is nearly impossible to fix once boundary walls, stands, and drainage are in the ground.
The reason is simple: a batsman or fielder looking into low evening sun cannot pick up the ball. It is not a minor comfort issue — it is a genuine safety and playability problem. Evening matches, floodlit practice sessions, and academy coaching in the 5–7pm slot all run into this if the ground faces the wrong way.
Mini-story — Faridabad, 2025. A school ground was laid out with the pitch running roughly east-west, because that fit the existing boundary wall neatly. Within one season, evening practice sessions after 5pm became unusable — batsmen at one end were facing directly into the setting sun and coaches moved sessions to a cramped adjacent field instead. Reorienting the square and re-cutting the pitch to a north-south axis cost the school close to ₹2 lakh in earthwork and re-turfing, on top of a lost season of proper evening coaching.
Land Requirement by Facility Type
Land needed ranges from about 1 acre for an academy up to 2.5 acres for an international-standard ground — and box cricket or a single practice lane fits on a fraction of that. Deciding which tier you are building before you evaluate land is what keeps the project on budget.
- International-standard ground: ~2–2.5 acres — full 90m-class boundary, pitch, infield, and space for stands/pavilion (not included in this figure).
- Domestic / club ground: ~1.5–2 acres — a smaller boundary radius (roughly 65–75m), still full-format cricket.
- Academy / training ground: ~1–1.5 acres — pitch plus practice infrastructure, no full-size outfield needed.

A 4-lane practice net academy is not simply four single lanes side by side. Each lane needs its own 3m width, but you also need buffer space between lanes so a mistimed shot in one net does not become a hazard in the next. Realistic 4-lane layouts run to roughly 15–18m of total width once spacing and a walkway between lanes are included, not a bare 12m (4 × 3m).
Practice Net Layout & Run-Up Space
Every bowling end needs a minimum of 5–10 meters of clear run-up space behind it, on top of the 22-yard pitch itself. This is the single most common layout mistake on Indian academy sites — squeezing the net lane to fit a smaller plot.
Skip the run-up allowance and a fast bowler sprinting in at full pace has nowhere to decelerate except the boundary netting itself. Balls hit the netting at speed instead of a controlled follow-through, and the netting frame takes repeated impact it was not designed for.
Mini-story — Chandigarh, 2024. A new academy built its practice nets on a tight urban plot and gave bowlers just under 3m of run-up behind the crease to save space for a fourth lane. Within four months, two fast bowlers had complained about pulling up hard just short of the boundary fence, and the rear netting on two lanes had visibly stretched from repeated end-on impact. The academy had to shorten the pitch mark, move the bowling crease forward, and rebuild the rear netting on both lanes — a fix that cost close to ₹90,000 and took the lanes out of use for a week during peak coaching season.
Where you put the boundary markers and scoreboard matters too, but mostly for logistics: keep them outside the boundary rope and on the side with vehicle or spectator access, not on the bowler's run-up side. What Goes Wrong With Layout — And the Fix Cost
Beyond orientation and run-up mistakes, the most expensive layout error is setting the boundary rope without confirming the site actually has the radius the plan assumes. This sounds obvious on paper and still happens on real sites, because the mistake is invisible until someone measures with a tape instead of eyeballing it against a fence line.
The fix is rarely just moving a rope. If the ground was designed for a 70m boundary and the usable land only supports 60m on one side, either the whole square shifts (re-cutting and re-leveling turf) or the boundary becomes asymmetric in a way that changes how the ground plays — a serious problem for a club chasing league or association approval.
Mini-story — Jaipur, 2025. A club association ground had its boundary rope laid out from an old survey sketch instead of an on-site measurement. Three days before its first league match, an inspection found one boundary edge was nearly 15m short of the required radius. The club had to re-peg and re-lay the boundary rope, adjust the sightscreen positions, and re-mark the 30-yard circle overnight — a rush fix that cost roughly ₹60,000 in labour and equipment hire, against a ground that had cost over ₹40 lakh to build.
Questions to Ask Before You Break Ground
- What is our target boundary radius, and has it been measured on the actual site, not estimated from a photo or sketch?
- Is the pitch oriented north-south to northeast-southwest to avoid evening sun glare?
- For a multi-lane net facility: does the plan include 5–10m run-up space behind every bowling end, not just the 3m lane width?
- Does the land size match the facility tier we actually need — academy, club, or international?
- Has the pitch and outfield slope been planned for drainage before turf goes down?
Getting the dimensions and orientation right on day one is the cheapest part of the whole project — it is paper and a measuring tape.
