Lay the courts across the basketball court's 92 ft length, each one taking a 30 ft-wide lane: three lanes use 90 ft of the available 92 ft, leaving barely 2 ft to spare. That is close to an exact fit at the minimum recommended width — good news for side-to-side spacing between adjacent courts.
The catch is the other direction. A pickleball court's minimum footprint length is 60 ft, but the basketball court is only 49 ft wide. That's 11 ft short of the preferred run-off. In practice, the 44 ft playing court fits with about 2.5 ft of clearance behind each baseline — well short of the 8 ft the minimum footprint spec calls for (tournament play prefers 10 ft), but workable for club and recreational use.
The Layout Math: 3 Courts vs 4 Courts
Three courts is the layout most contractors recommend for comfortable play. Four courts fit, but only by shrinking the side buffer between courts to roughly 2–2.5 ft each — tight enough that most clubs choose three over four.
For four courts, drop each lane to the pure 20 ft playing width instead of the 30 ft footprint width: four lanes of 20 ft use 80 ft of the 92 ft available, leaving about 12 ft to split across five boundary gaps — roughly 2.3–2.5 ft each. That is enough to keep balls from constantly rolling between courts, but not enough for players to move freely off the sideline without bumping the next court's boundary.

Can You Reuse the Existing Surface
Usually, yes. A basketball surface — outdoor acrylic-on-concrete or indoor hardwood and synthetic — is built to handle heavier impact than pickleball ever produces, so a sound surface only needs new lines and nets, not a rebuild.
What "sound" means in practice: outdoor acrylic with no active cracking, no chalking or powdering underfoot, and clean drainage with no birdbath puddles. Indoor hardwood with no delamination, no soft or bouncy panels, and a finish that isn't peeling. If those hold, the surface is fine for pickleball as-is.
If the surface fails any of those checks, resurface before marking — crack-fill and a fresh acrylic system outdoors, or a sand-and-refinish indoors. Skipping this step to save money is the single most common regret contractors hear about a year later, covered in the failure modes section below.

What Goes Wrong — and What It Costs to Fix
Two mistakes show up again and again in basketball-to-pickleball conversions: a carelessly measured kitchen line, and a surface that got reused without anyone actually inspecting it first — both are cheap to prevent during the layout stage and expensive to fix once players are already on the court.
