Neither option is a shortcut around the soil test — the CBR report is what tells you the depth and severity of the clay layer under each part of your plot, which is the input both approaches need. What Happens When You Skip It: The 12–18 Month Timeline
Skipped or under-scoped soil prep on a multi-sport complex almost never fails on day one — it fails 12 to 18 months later, and it fails across the shared plot rather than in one isolated spot. That delay is what makes it so easy for a cheap quote to look like the smart choice at handover.
- Months 1–6: Everything looks fine. Courts are marked, lit, and in use. Nothing visible has moved yet.
- First monsoon (months 6–12): The clay layer under one or more zones swells with absorbed water. Hairline stress starts under the surface, invisible from above.
- Dry season after (months 12–18): The soil shrinks back. Hairline cracks in a hard-court slab, a lifted seam in the turf apron, or a box-cricket lane pulling away from its footing all start appearing — often in more than one zone within weeks of each other.

North India's other conditions compound the risk. Extreme summer heat (42–48°C) followed by a sudden monsoon accelerates the same swell-shrink cycle that black-cotton soil already goes through, and control joints that work fine on stable soil are not enough on their own to stop movement-driven cracking.
