A school court sees 30–40 students rotating through it every period, several periods a day, five or six days a week — different shoes, different skill levels, far more scuffing than a private club court ever sees. Mini-story — Jaipur, 2024. A college sports committee chose the cheapest vinyl roll mat available, ₹1.4 lakh for two courts, to stretch a tight annual sports budget. With 300-plus students cycling through PE periods and evening practice on the same two courts, the thin unbacked mat had visible wear tracks and lifting seams within 18 months. Sizing Courts: School PE vs College Competitive Team
A school running a standard PE curriculum typically needs 1–2 courts to rotate classes through the day. A college fielding a competitive team needs 4 or more, so the full squad can train, scrimmage and run selection trials at the same time.
Two courts suit a staggered school timetable of 30–40 students per period. Check Your Existing Gym's Ceiling Height First
Before a single tile or mat goes down in an existing gymnasium, measure the clear height under the lowest beam, truss or light fixture. BWF requires 9m minimum for competitive play, and a lot of older Indian school gyms — built years ago for basketball or general assembly use — fall well short.
This is one of the most common and most avoidable mistakes institutional buyers make. A hall that comfortably clears a basketball backboard was never checked against a badminton smash, which travels almost straight up before it comes down. The 9m figure is measured to the lowest obstruction anywhere over the court — a hanging light fixture or a diagonal truss brace counts, not just the roof peak.

Lighting and Ventilation for Non-AC Halls
Competitive-level badminton needs 500 lux of even, low-glare lighting; purely recreational school play can get by on 300 lux. In a non-AC hall through North India's hot months, that lighting plan has to be designed alongside cross-ventilation, or evening practice sessions become unusable long before exam season ends.
Most institutional halls are not fully air-conditioned — the electricity load and running cost rarely fit a school or college budget the way they might for a commercial academy. Ridge vents, operable clerestory windows and fans positioned to avoid disturbing shuttle flight all matter more here than in a sealed AC facility. Get the lighting layout and ventilation plan reviewed together, not as two separate line items from two separate vendors.
Procurement: Tenders, Budgets and Timing
Institutional buyers face a buying process private clubs don't: multiple vendor quotes that have to be compared on identical scope, a budget tied to the academic-year cycle, and a construction window that realistically only opens during summer vacation.
Get at least 3 vendor quotes built off the same itemised bill of quantities — flooring grade, lighting lux, net posts, marking — so a "lower" bid isn't secretly a lower spec. Time the work to start right after the summer term ends, so flooring curing, lighting installation and any structural work finish before the new academic year begins, not mid-term.
Mini-story — Gurgaon, 2024. A school's management committee approved a ₹9 lakh two-court budget in March, floated the tender in April, and finalised a contractor only in late May with a 10-week completion estimate.
